Set along the Spokane River
The north Spokane neighborhood of Seven Mile sits beside both the Spokane River and one of the largest state parks in Washington state. “It’s close to Riverside State Park, so you get a ton of trail access,” says Realtor Steven Silbar of John L. Scott Realty, who has worked in the area for over eight years. “And even though it’s kind of out of the way, there’s still a fair amount of retail in the area. Getting downtown can take a minute, though.” The residential neighborhood offers residents easy access to north-side shopping and dining but is located far enough from the city center that privacy is a given.
The Seven Mile neighborhood is almost entirely residential with little business activity.

The Spokane River and Riverside State Park
For many residents, Seven Mile’s defining feature and biggest draw is its proximity to extensive parks and recreational areas. 11,000-acre Riverside State Park, one of the largest state parks in Washington, is by far the most popular state park in eastern Washington. The park offers a wide array of outdoor activities, including 55 miles of hiking, mountain biking and horseback riding trails. The Spokane River runs through the park, providing opportunities for fishing, kayaking and other water sports. The park is also home to a long stretch of the 37-mile Centennial Trail. It’s a 10-mile bike ride along the trail to Downtown Spokane.

Midcentury and contemporary homes against a woodsy backdrop
The neighborhood’s first residential developments were built in the 1950s, but most homes in Seven Mile were built in the last 30 years. Consequently, the neighborhood features a mix of midcentury ranch-style homes and split levels, along with more modern Craftsman and New Traditional homes. Many homes are close enough to get a view of Riverside State Park across the Spokane River. “The newer developments have larger square footage. Older homes have a little less space," says Sarah Bird, a broker at Windermere Spokane-North. “You can find anything from ranchers to four levels. A variety of homes.” Most properties in Seven Mile list for between $400,000 and $700,000. Homes in the neighborhood don’t hit the market all that often, as residents tend to stay for a long time.

North Central High’s groovy rivalry
Most students in the neighborhood attend public schools, and most of the neighborhood is served by the Spokane Public School District, though a small portion of the north side is served by the Nine Mile Falls School District. Indian Trail Elementary School has a B grade on Niche, while Salk Middle School has a B-minus on the site. North Central High School has an A grade and is known for its rivalry with fellow North Spokane high school Shadle Park, which culminates in an annual spirit competition at Spokane Arena known as Groovy Shoes.
Balboa Shopping
Seven Mile is entirely residential, so when residents need to do some shopping they have to head to neighboring Balboa, which has a Yoke’s Fresh Market and Safeway, along with a few popular restaurants. It’s a 2- to 4-mile drive from most Seven Mile homes to the nearest grocery store, slightly longer than in more central Spokane neighborhoods. The neighborhood is also just 2 miles from the extensive dining options along Northwest Boulevard, including beloved Spokane pizzeria The Flying Goat. The nearest major shopping centers are 6 miles east on Division Street.
Getting Downtown and to the airport
Downtown Spokane is 8 miles from Seven Mile via Nine Mile Road, and the vast majority of residents rely on cars to get around because Seven Mile lacks convenient bus service. However, alternate modes of transportation are becoming increasingly popular. “You’re relatively close to Spokane. People ride their bikes depending on where they work,” says Bird. Spokane International Airport is located 10 miles south of the neighborhood, while Fairchild Air Force Base, a major employer in the area, is 5 miles further in the same direction.
GreatSchools:
The GreatSchools Rating helps parents compare schools within a state based on a variety of school quality indicators and provides a helpful picture of how effectively each school serves all of its students. Ratings are on a scale of 1 (below average) to 10 (above average) and can include test scores, college readiness, academic progress, advanced courses, equity, discipline and attendance data. We also advise parents to visit schools, consider other information on school performance and programs, and consider family needs as part of the school selection process.
