Simple suburbia in north Spokane's Whitman community

Established blocks of single-family homes fill Whitman, a quiet pocket of northern Spokane. It's an almost strictly residential community where locals are more likely to walk to the local park or elementary school than to a buzzy commercial district, theater or event venue. As quiet as Whitman is, you don’t need to drive more than 10 minutes to try a new restaurant, do some big-box shopping or mountain bike on woodsy trails. Plus, it’s only 5 miles from downtown, whether you’re driving or commuting by Spokane Transit Authority bus.

Classic suburban streets and housing styles in northern Spokane

Single-family homes behind narrow sidewalks and grassy front lawns give Whitman’s blocks a classic suburban feeling. Buyers will see a blend of early 20th-century bungalows, Cape Cods and ranch-style homes built into the midcentury. Prices range from the upper $100,000s to the upper $300,000s. Whitman’s median single-family home price is in the upper $200,000s. That’s on par with nearby Nevada Lidgerwood, Bemiss and Logan, but slightly lower than Hillyard and North Hill. “This part of the north side is average. The prices aren’t the best, but they’re not the worst,” says Ana Wahl, a broker at Best Choice Realty who specializes in Spokane. “You can get more bang for your buck, more house for your money, than anywhere in the South Hill.”

Attending neighborhood and magnet Spokane Public Schools

Whitman is served by Spokane Public Schools. SPS assigns students to nearby neighborhood schools, including Whitman Elementary School, located in the middle of the community. The district also has a choice system, so families can apply for spots at other neighborhood or magnet schools.

Easy access to bus routes and downtown employment hubs

“Everything is kind of close by in that area. One of the characteristics of Spokane is that you can have everything around the corner,” Wahl says. Commuters might hop in their cars or walk down the sidewalk to the nearest Spokane Transit Authority bus stop. Downtown Spokane is just 5 miles away. Gonzaga University, a major employer and secondary education hub, is even closer to home.

Enjoying Rochester Heights Park and nearby recreation areas

Rochester Heights Park is Whitman’s central green space, home to a playground, athletic equipment, walking paths and a baseball diamond. Other small parks are several blocks from the neighborhood, and larger recreation areas like Esmerelda Golf Course and Beacon Hill’s mountain biking trails are within 10 minutes of home.

A short trip to North Spokane shopping centers

On the outskirts of Whitman, you can stop into stores like G & B Grocery and Walgreens or pull into the drive-through at Capstone Coffee. North Spokane’s busier commercial districts are less than a 10-minute drive from the community. Locals head to:

  • North Division Street, lined by commercial plazas with big chains like Trader Joe’s and Lowe’s
  • NorthTown Mall, an indoor mall on North Division Street, home to specialty retailers, a movie theater and a trampoline park
  • The Garland District, a walkable, historic shopping and dining district along Garland Avenue

Organizing events with the Whitman Neighborhood Council

Whitman has maintained its connected feeling and suburban community spaces across generations, in part thanks to the work of local volunteer organizations. You can meet neighbors by joining the Whitman Neighborhood Council, one of a handful of north Spokane councils that talk about local issues at the nearby Northeast Community Center each month. These neighborhood councils platform social and service events throughout the year, including farmers markets, fall festivals and skill-building workshops.
