Boston Road
Myriad options and more on the way along the Boston Road corridor
Walmart Supercenter, Kohls, Lowe’s and Stop & Shop are just a few of the retail stores residents have access to on the short drive along Boston Road from one end of the neighborhood to the other. Commerce used to be anchored by the Eastfield Mall, but the land it once occupied will soon be home to a major new mixed-use development. “They're in the process of tearing that down and replacing it with housing and a commercial plaza,” says Whitley, who adds that the type of housing has yet to be determined. Eateries include everything from a collection of fast-food chains to local favorites such as the family owned Siano’s Italian Pizzeria & Restaurant. The best-known dining option in the neighborhood is Friendly’s, a casual family restaurant chain that was founded in Springfield in 1935 as an ice cream shop. Its company headquarters are located along Boston Road just minutes from the neighborhood in the adjacent community of Wilbraham.Beach access and waterfront recreation are unique aspects of the neighborhood
Proximity to outdoor recreation is an attractive detail of the neighborhood. Five Mile Pond Park and the adjacent Lake Lorraine are popular spots for boating and fishing and also offer plenty of green space to explore and enjoy the natural landscape. In addition, residents have seasonal beach access for swimming at Five Mile Pond Park and Loon Pond, another neighborhood destination located less than a mile away. “That is unique to that part of the city,” Whitley says. “Boston Road is one of the few neighborhoods to have bodies of water like that.” North Branch Tributary Park is a smaller neighborhood green space that is perfect for passive recreation. North Branch Park, within walking distance of the neighborhood, provides a place to play basketball, a fitting activity in the city where the sport was invented in 1891. The Soccer City Sports Center is a popular indoor venue nearby that offers an array of leagues, tournaments and clinics.Colonial and Cape Cod architectural styles are prominent
The neighborhood packs a variety of options into its residential pockets. "It's a good mix," says Whitley. "The homes are mostly Colonials or Cape Cods." The Colonial Revival style is prominent among single-family homes and duplexes, while Cape Cod architecture is a highlight of the more established homes. Ranch-style homes on spacious lots also can be found among housing typically priced between $250,000 and $450,000. Smaller manufactured homes starting at under $100,000 provide an alternative option.Residents enjoy "gateway" access to points of interest in several nearby states
For those who want or need public transportation, bus stops can be found dotting Boston Road, which eventually merges with State Street and leads directly into Downtown Springfield about 6 miles away. Many of the city’s buses work out of nearby Union Station, whose Amtrak service is the Commonwealth’s busiest outside of the Greater Boston area. The downtown area is home to several annual events, highlighted by the Springfield Jazz & Roots Festival at Stearns Square each summer. Interstate 90 and 291 intersect less than 5 miles from the neighborhood, providing convenient travel to points of interest in several nearby states. "We're a great gateway city,” Whitley says. “We're within one to two hours of everything, whatever you're looking for." Three capital cities -- Hartford, Conn., Providence, R.I., and Boston – and the states of Vermont and New Hampshire, which provide skiing and other recreational adventures, are all located between 25 and 100 miles away. Just outside the city is Westover Airport, which has no commercial service but offers charter flights to major cities throughout the region.Central High School is one of the largest in western Massachusetts
The neighborhood’s youngest students can attend Warner School, rated C-plus by Niche and conveniently located in the neighborhood. Older students can attend John F. Kennedy Academy, rated C-minus, and Central High, a B-rated school. With more than 2,000 students, Central is one of the largest high schools in western Massachusetts, but the student-teacher ratio is 13 to 1. Visual and performing arts and STEM programs anchor the school’s advanced-course offerings.Moderate crime rating
The Criminal Apprehension Program index gives the neighborhood a 5-out-of-10, considered a moderate rating.
