Richmondtown
A legacy celebrated at Historic Richmond Town
The area is best known for Historic Richmond Town, an authentic, living history museum showcasing the American experience from 1660 through the early 1900s. During the spring and summer months, Historic Richmond Town bustles with true-to-life period reenactors as they demonstrate the historically accurate farming, building, cooking and business practices, allowing visitors to experience the evolution of Staten Island through its architecture and daily life. The museum hosts educational workshops, presentations, hands-on activities and concerts for students and tourists. The site is also the home of the annual Richmond County Fair, a Labor Day tradition since 1895 that attracts up to 15,000 visitors from across the region.Grand, luxury homes appeal to residents
In Richmondtown, very few homes look alike. The neighborhood is smaller than most, consisting of a pocket of neatly arranged single-family homes with off-street parking and welcoming curb appeal. Housing ranges from charming, raised ranch-style homes to luxury Foursquares. Ranch-style houses and bi-levels round out the low spectrum of prices, typically costing between $665,000 and $980,000. Though greatly ranging in size, many grand brick colonial-style homes have garages and are set on larger lots. Prices for these may start at $775,000 and climb to $1.8 million for newly built construction.A-rated schools in Staten Island
Students may begin their education at P.S. 23 Richmondtown, one of Staten Island’s most desirable elementary programs due to its high ratings for its academics and teachers. Kids can continue to I.S. 24 Myra S. Barnes. Both schools earn an A from Niche. At Susan E. Wagner High School, students receive a rigorous curriculum infused with career and college readiness programs. The high school features multiple high-achieving learning centers, including the Academy of Performing and Visual Arts, the Future Teachers Academy and the Institute of Medicine, among many others.Surrounded by nature on the Staten Island Greenbelt
Richmondtown is surrounded by parks, cemeteries and forest preserves. The neighborhood borders the Staten Island Greenbelt, where 35 miles of trails and bike paths connect New York City’s largest contiguous system of public parklands and natural areas. The Greenbelt consists of several smaller greenspaces, including athletic fields, playgrounds, golf courses and protected wildlife habitats. La Tourette Golf Course sits just north of Richmondtown and is the only golf course on the island with a practice facility. Willowbrook Parkway hugs the neighborhood’s eastern border and offers a stretch of open green space with additional trails.Proximity to shopping centers and grocery stores
A few shopping centers flank Richmondtown, including Oakwood Center. The strip houses a Netcost Market grocery store and the Oakwood Diner, a laid-back spot offering American and Greek eats. The nearby Tysens Park Shopping Center and adjacent Hylan Plaza feature a variety of restaurants and shops, such as big-box retailers like HomeGoods and Old Navy. Additional grocery options include Stop & Shop and ShopRite of Hylan Plaza. North of the neighborhood, Italian classics like pasta dishes and Chicken Parmesan are served at Casa Verde Restaurant's white linen-covered tables. Next door, Mark’s Bake Shoppe offers freshly baked pastries and treats like cookies and specialty cakes.Getting around on the island, connections to Manhattan
The Verrazano-Narrows Bridge, Staten Island’s most direct link to Brooklyn and beyond, can take nearly 20 minutes to reach during the morning rush, so many commuters prefer to ride the bus or train to the Staten Island Ferry and enjoy the views during the free 25-minute boat ride to lower Manhattan. Others find having a car is more convenient for transportation on the island itself, with major thoroughfares including the Staten Island Expressway and the West Shore Expressway. Additionally, the S54 and S74 bus lines run along the neighborhood’s northern boundary on Richmond Road. The Staten Island Railway – which runs the length of the island – stops at Oakwood Heights Station on Richmondtown’s southern border.
