The birthplace of Minnesota
Stillwater is often referred to as the “birthplace of Minnesota” for its role in hosting the 1848 territorial convention, which later led to Minnesota's establishment as a state. Settled along the western banks of the St. Croix River, the city attracts residents with its A-rated school district, charming 1900s-era homes and narrative that precedes Minneapolis. “Stillwater is rich in history,” says Lynn VanOrsdale, Realtor with Edina Realty. Incorporated as a city in 1854, Stillwater began as a lumber town and through its expansion, contributed to Minnesota’s recognition as one of the largest milling markets in the world. Today, the city is home to more than 19,000 residents, and top employers like the Stillwater Area Public Schools District and Diasorin, a biotech company. In addition to its job opportunities, Stillwater is also known for its cultural events like the annual World Snow Sculpting Championship. John Hinzman, community development director for Stillwater says their city is more than just a weekend destination. “We’re growing and redeveloping on the edge of the Twin Cities metropolitan area, but we’re a standalone city. We’re close to so many amenities, but we also have our own sense of identity." Local amenities like Lowell Park, for its riverfront views and The St. Croix Valley Recreation Center, for its year-round recreational options, are popular with residents. “And the St. Croix River also attracts water lovers from around the state," adds VanOrsdale. All just 20 miles east of downtown St. Paul.

Homes in Stillwater are often prized for their strong school district and proximity to urban amenities. With a median sales price of around $480,000, “Stillwater will remain a seller’s market as we move into 2025,” says VanOrsdale, who has over 22 years of real estate experience. “If a property has been well prepared and priced accurately, it will likely sell quickly and see multiple offers.” Prices in Stillwater can range from as low as $100,000 for a one-bedroom condo to upwards of $800,00 for a four-bedroom traditional in downtown Stillwater. Some particularly large and luxurious homes can even reach into the low millions. Homes located throughout downtown date back to the early 1900s and come in various historic styles, like Queen Annes and American Foursquares, both of which feature prominent front porches. Newly constructed homes like two-story Traditional designs can be found in the northwest corner of the city and tend to sell for around $600,000. Single-family homes are the most common style in the city; however, some multi-family condos and twin homes are also available.

Seasonal events and the World Snow Sculpting Championship
In January, the Greater Stillwater Chamber of Commerce hosts the World Snow Sculpting Championship at Lowell Park. Here, teams of artists from across the globe compete for the best snow sculpture design. Events begin on the 1st, with a snowman scavenger hunt and a taste of nations festival, leading to the official kick-off ceremony on the 15th. The festival was developed in 2020 following the pandemic to foster community and economic relief. The whole city gets involved and most businesses contribute through sponsorships or promotions. Lowell Park is also home to Summer Tuesdays, a series of local markets, live music performances and movie showings from July through August. The Stillwater Harvest Fest is held each October and features two-days of food trucks, live music and a range of fall themed activities, like a chili cook-off or the battle to paddle competition — where participants paddle down the St. Croix River in giant hollowed-out pumpkin boats.
