A town steeped in history

Established in 1791, the Town of Stillwater has seen more than its fair share of history. American forces defeated a British invasion within its borders, marking the first time the British Army ever surrendered to another country. The Battle of Saratoga, now the site of Saratoga National Historical Park, sits north of Stillwater Village, where many residents live, yet the area’s rich history is everywhere. “As a kid living on Lake Street, I found a cannonball in our garden and became an instant hero in my second-grade class,” says James “Ed” McClements, Realtor and broker of McBenefits Inc. and president of the Stillwater Historical Society. The rural community is steeped in reminders like this, but Stillwater has also built a reputation for its warm hospitality. “This is a town of tradition, love and families,” McClements says. “We all celebrated when the high school basketball team won the state championships this year. We also have one of the lowest crime rates.” CAP Index gives Stillwater a 2 on crime, below the national average of 4, making it one of the safest places in Upstate New York to live.

Village, rural and lakefront homes

Homes in Stillwater are concentrated in the village along the Hudson River or along the shoreline of Saratoga Lake in the town’s northwest corner. Historic Victorians from the 1800s occasionally go on the market here, but Cape Cods and ranches are village staples. Buyers can find townhouses near the lake with one- and two-car garages and large lakefront colonials. There has also been an influx of new construction in the last several years, featuring mid-sized contemporary ranches with hardwood floors, open floor plans and high ceilings. As a result, home prices vary wildly, starting at $130,000 and climbing to about $2.5 million for properties with significant land or lakefront access. “New ranches and colonials in the $400,000s are ideal for first-time homebuyers,” says Tom Marks, a real estate agent with Coldwell Prime Properties and a developer in the area. “They can save as much as $100,000 from what you’d pay in Saratoga Springs, and I’ve had buyers come up from Albany and Schenectady.” While most of Stillwater is lined with creeks and can experience mild flooding, homebuyers should know that properties near the Hudson River are more vulnerable.

Battlefields and parks in Stillwater

The 3,000-acre Saratoga National Historical Park is brimming with historical sites that residents can explore and learn about, including battlefields, the final encampment of British forces and the Schuyler Estate, the country plantation of Philip J. Schuyler, a Revolutionary War Major General, U.S. Senator and businessman. The park’s history is even brought to life through historical reenactments. Hiking and biking trails retrace the footsteps of 18th-century soldiers, and open spaces are ideal for horseback riding or cross-country skiing. During the summer, the community goes swimming, kayaking and canoeing at Brown's Beach and Marina on Saratoga Lake. The private marina does not allow public launching or docking, but visitors can rent pontoons, kayaks and paddleboards. The Village of Stillwater Playground provides children with a fun neighborhood spot to climb, slide, swing and burn energy.

Village eateries and lakefront dining

Like homes in Stillwater, restaurants and businesses are concentrated in the village or lake areas. Upton Coffee on Hudson Avenue greets customers with a large bay casement window reminiscent of an 18th-century storefront and a bright interior. Bucciero’s Pizzeria down the street is known for its wings and dish-style pizza. Out by Saratoga Lake, the Hideaway offers fine dining at the Saratoga Lake Golf Club, and Dock’s Tavern on Saratoga Lake offers upscale pub fare, craft beer and an outdoor deck to watch the sunset. The rural countryside, too, holds hidden gems like Crow Hill Country Crafts, an antique and primitives shop, and the popular horse show facility White Hollow Farm. For groceries, there’s a Price Chopper 3 miles south of the village in Mechanicville.

Nearly 20 Historical Markers

The Town of Stillwater shares its rich history through a series of historical markers that point out significant places, such as United Church, first built in 1873 as the Second Baptist Church, or the home of Rensselaer Schuyler on Hudson Avenue, the youngest child of Major General Philip Schuyler. Most of the blue and gold signs that mark the history are located near the road to identify sites quickly.
