An agricultural community with growing families near San Antonio

Known for growing delicious watermelon and its wide open spaces, Stockdale is a small Wilson County town that’s big on good living. Sitting at the intersection of US Highway 87 and Texas State Highway 123, the town is just 40 miles from San Antonio, offering a comfortable neighborhood near the big city. Horses and livestock freely roam on acreage ranchland in Stockdale, sharing their space with ranches and farms. “Most people who move out here come because they want the small town feel. All the small towns in Wilson County are similar in that the neighbors interact with each other more because they get to see them all the time and they like that,” says Nikki Myrick, outreach librarian and the Wilson County Public Library. “My family moved out here when my kids were small so they could have a longer childhood. They could be kids and play outside and do all the things kids are supposed to do. That wasn’t going to happen in the city.”

Horse farms and single-family homes

Beyond the great outdoors, residential areas are filled with a variety of homes that are fit for the families that fill them. Ranch-style homes sit back from the street on spacious lots perfect for entertaining friends and family outdoors. Traditional-style homes on corner lots offer cozy porches but a more modern feel, while Cape Cod-influenced homes display characteristic dormers with pillared front patios. Homes are generally priced between $100,000 and $400,000, with some homes on large lots reaching around $600,000 or more.
