A sprawling residential community on the north side of Stockton

On the northern side of Stockton, Valley Oak is a sprawling collection of suburban streets, dotted with neighborhood parks. While the majority of the neighborhood is residential, Hammer Lane runs down the center of the community, lined with supermarkets, restaurants and car dealerships, so everything residents might need is within reach. Still, its location means residents can also easily access the neighboring city of Lodi—while also enjoying options for both city’s school districts. Even though Valley Oak offers plenty within and around it, residents can come home to their quiet residential streets to stroll through their neighborhood or walk the dog.

Spanish-influenced homes along Valley Oak's wide streets

New Traditional, Craftsman and ranch-style homes with Spanish Revival influences huddle close together along Valley Oak’s wide streets. Residents can take evening strolls along the sidewalks, which sit right along the curb. While front yards are often just a small square of grass, residents add personal touches to properties by planting trees here or putting up fences and hedges between them and their neighbors. Cypress trees rise over the single-story homes, adding a touch of green to the landscape. Homes across Valley Oak typically sell between $350,000 and $650,000, with the more recent builds and New Traditionals pricing on the higher end of the range.

Health programs through Ronald McNair High School

Valley Oak splits its students between two school districts, depending on what side of Hammer Lane they live on—Lodi Unified School District on the northern side and Stockton Unified School District to the south. Those on the Lodi side can attend a number of elementary schools for kindergarten through sixth grade, including Westwood Elementary School. Morada Middle School serves a large portion of the students on this side of Valley Oak. Both schools earn B-minus rankings from Niche. At B-rated Ronald E. McNair High School, students can enroll in the three-year Health Careers Academy, which offers hands-on learning opportunities alongside field trips and health fairs.

For students south of Hammer Lane, Valentine Payton Elementary School is one of the schools that serves grades kindergarten through eighth. It receives a B from Niche. After, students continue on to Cesar Chavez High School, which offers Career and Technical Education pathways for business management, software development and law. It earns a B-minus ranking.

Taking the bus to the supermarkets in Valley Oak

While most communities in Valley Oak have sidewalks, residents will likely need a car when traveling outside of Valley Oak. The local buses, powered through San Joaquin Regional Transportation District, run along Hammer Lane and link residents to the supermarkets located here. Because Hammer Lane is such a busy thoroughfare, residents living closer to it may hear traffic as it passes. California Route 99, or the Golden State Highway, stretches along the eastern border of Valley Oak, connecting people to Lodi, 10 miles to the north. Folks can also take this thoroughfare to Stockton Metropolitan Airport, 12 miles away, which offers nonstop flights to Las Vegas and Phoenix. Downtown Stockton is just 5.5 miles away, accessible along El Dorado Street. Dignity Health – St. Joseph’s Medical Center is the nearest hospital, just 4.2 miles away.

Valley Oak's community centers and go-to soccer fields

On the southern side of Valley Oak, Panella Park features a pond surrounded by walking paths and trees that people can stroll through. Kids can play at the park, and there are also tennis courts and baseball fields. The park is home to the Arnold Rue Community Center, where people can play at the indoor basketball and volleyball courts. The micro-library has a limited selection of books. Neighborhood parks like Cortez Park are smaller residential parks, walkable from the surrounding homes, offering playgrounds, basketball and tennis courts and walking paths. “There’s Stockton Soccer Complex, and all the kids go there to play soccer,” says Realtor Lance McHan with Lance McHan. The park offers six adult and six youth fields, and while it hosts local leagues, groups can also gather here to play a quick game. There are plenty of spots for spectators to watch their children and friends play, and the new playground here helps keep younger kids entertained

Unique burger options and taco joints around Valley Oak

Costco and a Walmart Supercenter sit off Hammer Lane, so residents don’t have to travel beyond Valley Oak for groceries. Another Walmart and WinCo are grocery stops on the southern side of the community, while Raley’s is just off Morada Lane on the western side. Over by Raley’s, MI Burgers features unique patties, like salmon, lamb and falafel. At Tacos Chapala off Hammer Lane, people can walk up to the counter to order before taking their food to the dining area on red plastic trays. Just outside of Valley Oak, The Kitchen at Stonebriar’s menu features entrées like duck and salmon and a dining room lit by a colorful blown glass chandelier.

Stockton's cultural events and street fairs in Lodi

Stockton offers many annual festivals and traditions, like Stockton Flavor Fest in May. This festival highlights the culinary scene in Stockton, along with cultural performances and live demonstrations. The profits support the city’s local nonprofit organizations. “There’s the Obon-Japanese festival in August. You get to learn about different cultures and try out some amazing foods,” Han says. “People show up in their traditional gowns and do dances.” Over in Lodi, Lodi Street Faire takes place in May and October, taking up 14 blocks of its downtown area with 500 vendors.
