Former resort town on the state border
Located at the northwestern corner of Arkansas, just a stone’s throw away from both the major urban center of Bentonville and the borders of Oklahoma and Missouri, the small city of Sulphur Springs brims with small-town charm. This city of under 500 residents, formerly a resort town, continues to offer a comforting hometown atmosphere to newcomers with its well-established restaurants, its local flea market, and the scenic beauty of the Springfield Plateau. Sulphur Springs, located in Benton County, is one of six Arkansas communities to bear that name, which derives from this city’s origins as a mineral spa resort. An 1889 history of the city called Sulphur Springs a “delightful summer resort beautifully situated in the vale of Butler Creek…distant by highway northwest from Bentonville 18 miles,” with “romantic and wild” natural scenery in every direction. The age of the American spa town may have long since come to an end, but little about Sulphur Springs’ verdant scenery has changed.
Sulphur Springs is located on Arkansas Highway 59, just south of the Missouri border.

Vibrant housing market with a variety of styles and prices
Sulphur Springs’ current residents mostly live in bungalow and ranch-style homes situated along tree-shaded streets, with this historic community continuing to exist within the area of a single square-mile. The end of Sulphur Springs’ spa-town era is far from a moment of decline, however; this community continues to have a vibrant housing market, with homes selling for anywhere from $45,000 for houses in need of refurbishment to $250,000 for recently upgraded residences. Many houses on the market offer impressive backyard sizes; Collier & Associates listing agent A.J. Shirey says that homebuyers can, “Get away from it all with peaceful hilltop views and room for your horses or cattle.” Sulphur Springs’ small-town nature may hold great appeal for those who prefer rural life to living in a bustling urban center like nearby Fayetteville; Shirey adds, “If dirt roads, privacy, and a view are your thing, come take a look.”
