Sidewalks link Birnie to Downtown Sumter
Though rural South Carolina isn’t known for its walkability, Birnie residents can easily stroll to Sumter’s downtown district. Concrete sidewalks trim the neighborhood’s residential blocks, connecting to the local shops and restaurants about a mile north. Dozens of other small businesses are just a 2-mile drive from Birnie along U.S. Highway 521. “That area’s basically our main shopping strip,” says Talmadge Tobias, a Sumter native and Realtor with Re/Max Summit. “It has all your big box retailers, grocery stores, the mall and a bunch of different restaurants.” Along with nearby conveniences, he says the neighborhood offers “some of the most affordable homes in Sumter.”
