Modest homes in Sumter's industrial district
Lemira’s modest ranch-style homes sit side by side in quiet residential boroughs just south of the Columbia and Sumter Railroad, a largely industrial area on the east side of Sumter. Bordered by dozens of manufacturers and packing plants, Lemira “appeals to a lot of the people working over there,” says Talmadge Tobias. Former city planner and current Realtor with Re/Max Summit, Tobias is a lifelong Sumter resident with experience selling homes all over the city. Along with an easy commute, he says Lemira offers some of the most affordable homes in the area, with most listing under $170,000.

Try South Carolina Hash at Ward's Bar-B-Q
Liberty Street is a sparse shopping and dining corridor just north of Lemira. It has a couple of traditional Southern-style restaurants, including Ward’s Bar-B-Q. This beloved little barbeque hut takes a unique approach to the state’s specialty dish, South Carolina hash. Instead of using mustard or beef, Ward’s makes a pork-based red hash that “everybody here raves about,” Tobias says. More local restaurants, breweries and the Piggly Wiggly are less than a mile away in Downtown Sumter.
