Scenic and aptly-named Sun Village is a Palmdale suburb that feels more like an isolated rural community. Located near the border of the Mojave Desert and San Gabriel Mountains, it gets nearly 300 sunny days each year and features beautiful mountain views. Those clear skies are perfect for stargazing as well. “There are hardly any streetlights, and the houses are pretty spaced out,” says local real estate agent Carlos Paiz, “so at night it feels like you can see every star in the sky. It’s the kind of place where residents really feel a personal connection with nature.”
1,000-2,000 square foot ranch-style homes make up the vast majority of Sun Village’s housing inventory, often with sizable yards. Prices are typical of the area, ranging from $300,000-$600,000 depending on the house and lot size. Throughout the neighborhood, you can expect to find beautiful mountain views and yards brimming with native trees and shrubs.
Sun Village is a laid-back old-west-style community where life tends to move at its own pace. When locals want a bit of excitement, they can always head to downtown Palmdale — about nine miles west — but for the most part, village residents make their own fun. Locals can go jogging at Jackrabbit Flat Wildlife Sanctuary, visit one of the many nearby ranches and equestrian centers and go for a ride in the desert wash, or swing by Golden Star Vineyards and uncork a locally grown and fermented pinot noir.
Sun Village’s Jackie Robinson Park, which was dedicated by its namesake over half a century ago, is also a popular neighborhood meetup spot. It features playing fields, a playground and a gymnasium and is a popular spot for afterschool programs and community events. When residents want a real outdoor adventure, the 346,000-acre San Gabriel Monument wilderness area starts just ten miles to the south and offers hundreds of miles of hiking, biking and off-roading trails.
Shopping and dining options in the neighborhood are by no means extensive, but when locals need to get groceries, they can stop by El Novillo Market or pick up some fresh produce at Whalley’s Orchard. And while there aren’t any department stores in Sun Village, there is Charlie Brown Farms, the iconic Antelope Valley general store/candy shop/restaurant/eclectic gift boutique.
Hungry locals can also grab some grub at the narrowly named but diversely stocked Big Al’s Pizza, which serves pizza, Mexican food and ice cream. Or they can pick up an expertly crafted sandwich at the highly rated Tibor’s Gourmet European Deli and maybe take home some of their house-made Hungarian sausages for dinner. Residents searching for more extensive retail and dining options don’t have to go far, either; the shopping centers and restaurants of East Palmdale are just a couple miles down the road.
Public schools in the area are administered by Antelope Valley Union District. They include Sun Village’s own Littlerock High School, which offers students a variety of academic and career pathways, from agricultural studies to biomedical science to JROTC.
Sun Village is a small town with the city on one side and the great outdoors on the other — And that’s just how residents like it.
