Tucked into the Appalachian Mountains is the low-key and chill suburban neighborhood of Sutersville-Gratztown. Just 23 miles from Pittsburgh, this small valley town offers a quiet community away from the bustle of the big city. “A lot of people go there for the peace and serenity,” says Nathan Miller, a Realtor at Integrity Plus Realty. Miller lives one town over and has been selling real estate in the area for three and a half years.

Settled in 1867, Sutersville-Gratztown is full of architectural history. Walking down the streets, you’ll see stately Colonial Revivals with brick facades, charming Cape Cods with gabled roofs and sprawling ranch-style homes displaying red star emblems for good luck. Many were built in the 1950s and have been “passed down from generation to generation,” Miller says. You can find smaller, older fixer-uppers for less than $100,000 and newly renovated homes with historic facades starting at $225,000. Houses on the eastern side of town often have large yards, but as you move west, they become smaller. But that doesn’t mean there is a shortage of outdoor recreation.

Hop on the Great Allegheny Passage Trail and walk along the winding tree-lined path of the Youghiogheny River, or the “Yough” as locals call it. This 150-mile hiking and biking trail runs through Pennsylvania, Maryland and Washington, D.C. Access the pathway at the Sutersville Trailhead, just across the river. Less than a mile down the road is the 14 Sons Sutersville Memorial Park, which honors 14 fallen Sutersville soldiers. While there, practice your layup on the basketball court or let your kids run free on the playground. When it comes to neighborhood activities, the Sutersville Moose Lodge offers a mix of public and members-only events. Sign up for a cookie decorating class or bring your kids to the annual children’s Halloween party, where everyone is welcome.

Neighborhood kids may attend schools in the Yough School District, starting with West Newton Elementary School. West Newton received a B-minus rating on Niche and has an 11-to-1 student-teacher ratio. Students can continue their education at Yough Intermediate Middle School, rated a C-plus on Niche. They can finish their primary education at Yough Senior High School, which received a B-minus on Niche.
Sutersville-Gratztown is largely residential, but a few local shops and restaurants line the streets near the Yough. Start your day with a buttery croissant and hot cup of coffee at The Coffee Shop on 2nd Avenue, then pick up your custom T-shirt order at The Embroidery People, a local embroidered goods shop. For weekly necessities, hop on Pennsylvania State Route 51 and head less than 12 miles south to Belle Vernon. There, you can find a CVS Pharmacy, a Walmart Supercenter, and a Lowe’s, among other things. As you head home for the evening, stop in Elizabeth for a plate of zesty chicken piccata at Driscoll’s and Sons, a family-owned restaurant.

While this small town may offer a quiet getaway, a drive up Pennsylvania State Route 51 will bring you to the lively city of Pittsburgh. Head toward the coast by hopping on nearby Interstate Highway 76 or leave town by heading west on Pennsylvania State Route 43 to Finleyville Airport, a small, public airfield.

GreatSchools: The GreatSchools Rating helps parents compare schools within a state based on a variety of school quality indicators and provides a helpful picture of how effectively each school serves all of its students. Ratings are on a scale of 1 (below average) to 10 (above average) and can include test scores, college readiness, academic progress, advanced courses, equity, discipline and attendance data. We also advise parents to visit schools, consider other information on school performance and programs, and consider family needs as part of the school selection process.
