A changing landscape in Southwest Syracuse
Less than 2 miles from Downtown Syracuse, the Southwest neighborhood comprises most of the Southwest Gateway. This 228-acre area borders Interstate 81 and has historically been known as an overlooked, under-invested section of the city. Still, Southwest's resilient character is showcased through its hard-working residents and civic leaders who are leading the way to change with food pantries and other community-focused services. The push for change is strong, with the state of New York granting $10 million for a Downtown Revitalization Initiative in 2022 that aims to improve walkability, restore historic landmarks and create new housing and businesses.
The Southwest Gateway initiative coincides with Syracuse's Interstate 81 Viaduct Project. "The city is planning to rip out I-81 and replace it with a boulevard-type community grid," says Susan Li, Syracuse native and Real Estate Associate Broker with Coldwell Banker Prime Properties. "With Micron's move to Syracuse, they are bringing in 9,000 new jobs in the next 10 years, so in part, all our infrastructure needs to be updated and upgraded. But ripping out I-81 in a way is also an effort to desegregate the city." Apart from the spotlight on Southwest's future, the neighborhood stands out with its close-knit community, comparatively affordable homes and proximity to Downtown Syracuse.
