Tree-lined streets and historic charm in Strathmore
Located about 3 miles southwest of Downtown Syracuse , Strathmore is a residential neighborhood known for its early 20th-century architecture, leafy boulevards and proximity to some of the city's largest parks. "Strathmore is an old-city Syracuse neighborhood," says Chip Hodgkins , associate broker and owner of Hodgkins Homes Team at Hunt Real Estate ERA. "It's like an island within the city brimming with classic homes from the 1930s, '40s and '50s."
Established in 1917 during the streetcar suburb era, Strathmore was influenced by the Garden City Principles. With winding tree-lined roads and elegant homes set back from the street, it emphasizes the natural environment and community connections. "It's by far one of the most desirable neighborhoods in Syracuse," Hodgkins says. Today, Strathmore remains a sought-after residential enclave for those seeking historic charm, community and serenity within the city limits.

Tudors, colonials and stately single-family homes
Tree-lined streets feature an eclectic mix of architectural styles, from Tudor Revivals and Queen Annes to Craftsman-style bungalows and Colonial Revivals, and a handful of mid-century ramblers are scattered along the west side of the neighborhood. Most homes were constructed between 1900 and 1960, with many featuring original woodwork, fireplaces and slate roofs. "It's like the best of both worlds, with classic woodwork paired with updated finishes," Hodgkins says. Sales prices in Strathmore typically range from $130,000 to $300,000, with larger properties fetching between $300,000 and $435,000. Duplexes and other multi-family units are more prominent near South Avenue, with prices ranging from the $100,000s to the low-$200,000s. "Micron's move to Syracuse is driving housing prices higher. This is the highest prices have ever been in Central New York, yet the lowest they ever will be going forward," Hodgkins says.

Parks, gardens and scenic trails around Strathmore
Strathmore is bordered by two of Syracuse's most prominent green spaces. Upper Onondaga Park is a 67-acre green space with a community pool, playground, and courts for tennis, pickleball and basketball. Walking trails wind around Hiawatha Lake, where community events such as summer concerts and seasonal festivals take place. With an average annual snowfall of around 128 inches and below-freezing temperatures in the winter, Hiawatha Lake transforms into a makeshift ice-skating rink, while rolling hills turn into sledding destinations.
The adjacent Lower Onondaga Park features landscaped gardens, a small stone bridge along a reflecting pool, a spray ground and another playground. The Onondaga Creekwalk, a 5-mile trail, passes through the park's eastern edge, leading joggers and cyclists from Armory Square to the southern edge of Onondaga Lake. Additional green spaces surround the community, including the Woodland Reservoir. Situated high on a hill, a paved walking trail encircles the Reservoir, and its surrounding hillside, formerly known as Lilly's Grove, continues to be a popular spot for sunset picnics.
Wadsworth Park is another neighborhood green space with a baseball diamond, tennis courts and playground. Strathmore residents are also just 2 miles from the city's largest park—Burnet Park—where visitors can enjoy the Rosamond Gifford Zoo, an outdoor fitness center, sports facilities, an expansive playground and a public 9-hole golf course. Bellevue Country Club, a private golf club and event venue, also borders Strathmore.

Maloney's Pizzeria, the neighborhood's only eatery, is a community staple known for its generously topped pizzas. A short drive along Onondaga Boulevard leads residents to Limp Lizard Lounge Bar & Grill, where a Wild West facade and cozy interior accentuate its hearty barbecue offerings.
Other nearby amenities include Wegmans and Price Chopper. Additional establishments include a hardware store, Walgreens pharmacy and other popular fast-food chains. Larger retailers line West Genesee Street, about 5 miles away, while downtown Syracuse offers additional shopping, dining and entertainment options nearby.
