Opportunity for first-time buyers

Temple is a peaceful community where families can take leisurely strolls through the neighborhood. "Temple is very community-oriented," says eXp Realtor Taj Simmons, who lives in the area and has sold many homes here over the years. "It's conveniently located near shopping and dining, so you have the best of both worlds," Simmons says. Temple is also budget-friendly, an excellent opportunity for first-time buyers, Simmons says.

Walkable streets

Though there are a few condos, Temple mainly comprises single-family homes. Architectural styles vary, depending on the home’s age and location; however, there is a mix of bungalows, ranch-style and Colonial revivals. Prices here run from $155,000 to $541,000. Most backyards are 1/4 to 1/3 of an acre. For $400,000, a buyer can get a 1,628-square-foot, custom-built log home with four bedrooms and two-and-a-half bathrooms on 3.1 acres. Temple streets, laid out in a grid pattern, are wide and tree-lined. The lawns are neat and manicured, and there are sidewalks. Most homes have garages; residents who don't have garages are able to park in the driveway or on the street.

Elementary school helps protect the environment

Students attend Muhlenberg Elementary Center (MEC), the largest elementary school in Berks County. MEC teaches social skills through the High 5 Initiative, a nonprofit organization dedicated to preserving the natural environment. The school received a C from Niche. Muhlenberg Junior High School also received a C grade from Niche. Muhlenberg High School, which has a B from Niche, includes world languages and technology in its curriculum.

The Muhlenberg Township and the Parks Department offers programs and events throughout the year, including a flea market and yoga in the park. The Reading Blue Mountain and Northern Passenger Railroad is a popular destination offering visitors scenic train rides using their historic and restored steam engine fleet. Locals can take U.S. 422 to Pottsville for Shell's Miniature Golf & Restaurant, a popular destination for all ages. It's the largest mini golf course in the state, with 27 holes. The course also features landscaping, water features and bridges. The restaurant sells burgers, hot dogs, fried chicken and more, and there is also an ice cream station.

Temple has eateries galore

Residents can drive 3.4 miles via back roads to buy groceries at Giant. Boscov's Fairgrounds Farmers Market sells fresh fruits, vegetables, meats and flowers. The market includes Country BBQ, Dutch Maid Bakery and Johnny's Pizza among its merchants. Walmart Supercenter is a 3.2-mile drive via back roads. "The Temple area has the most eateries in Berks County," Simmons says. Temple Family Diner has been a staple here for over 35 years. Temple is a small community, it is safe and comfortable. Its just far enough out of the inner city that it is an escape from crime. But it is close enough that you can experience the excitement and culture of the city.
