Tewksbury is an escape from the Boston crowds
Located over 20 miles north of Boston, Tewksbury draws people looking for historic charm, extra space and distance from big city crowds. “They want to have a little quieter life, a big lot and it’s more affordable,” says Mark Kratman, chairman of the Tewksbury Select Board. A noteworthy site in this town of just over 30,000 people is the Tewksbury Hospital, which appears in the Netflix movie “Hubie Halloween” and the television show “Castle Rock.” The buildings on the hospital’s campus show ornate Queen Anne and Romanesque Revival styles. The rest of the town has a few shopping and dining centers and several neighborhoods near woods, nature trails and over 400 acres of protected lands. “It’s a beautiful place where you want to raise your family,” Kratman says. “A lot of people don’t even lock their doors when they go home at night.”
Homes show off the New England charm
Homes are located along roads lined by mature trees. Buyers seeking extra yard space will find several lots that are 1 acre or larger. Architectural variety is synonymous with Tewksbury, with homes ranging from modest ranch-style and Cape Cods to larger saltboxes and colonial styles. “It has a lot of that New England town charm,” says Tracey Cleversey, broker and owner of the Hive Property Group. Many homes under 2,500 square feet sell from $500,000 to about $830,000, while larger ones can run between $840,000 and $1.7 million. Townhouses mostly go from $380,000 to $770,000, while condos can range from $230,000 to $500,000. The town’s median sale price of about $660,000 is nearly half that of Boston’s.

Popular activities include hiking, kayaking and sports
The Tewksbury Hospital Conservation Restriction Area has a few miles of unpaved trails that allow hikers and dog walkers to pass across meadows and woods and see wetlands. Some of the town’s paths include boardwalks and lead to the Bay Circuit Trail & Greenway, a more than 230-mile network in Eastern Massachusetts. The Shawsheen River flows through town, drawing many anglers and kayakers. Basketball and tennis courts, baseball fields and a skate park are just a few of the amenities in the Saunders Recreational Area around Livingston Street. “If you go down to Livingston Street on the weekend, you can expect to see thousands of kids and parents down there,” Kratman says. Golfers may go to the public, 18-hole Trull Brook Golf Course.

Dining scene has Italian, sushi and craft beer staples
The town has several Italian restaurants, including staples like Al Fresca Ristorante. Al Fresca has various seafood dishes and traditional favorites like chicken marsala. “If you go in there on Wednesday through Saturday, you’re waiting in line,” Kratman says. For sushi and teppanyaki-style cooking, there is Kyoto Japanese Steak House. The popular Tree House Brewing Company has a taproom in the former Tewksbury Country Club. In addition to having pizza and beers, its patrons can play nine holes of golf at The Course at Tree House. Chain stores in town include Walmart and Market Basket.
