Tewksbury is full of history, farms and community
Hunterdon County is known for its more rural scenery, with rolling hills and family farms, but Tewksbury Township stands out. The area has held on to its history and agricultural roots long before it was established in 1755. German and Dutch immigrants settled their homes and founded farms, and although centuries have passed, the spirit of farming and community have never left. Shaun Van Doren is president of the Tewksbury Historical Society and the township historian. His family has been in Tewksbury for over eight generations. “We are diverse, but people see the long-standing family roots,” Van Doren says. “A lot of families in Tewksbury and in Hunterdon County can trace their histories back generations. There were primarily fruit farms and orchards; then there was a transition to dairy farms, and now, equestrian and agricultural farms. There are probably as many horses as there are people here.” While the slow and serene lifestyle is a major draw, residents also move into the area for Tewksbury’s highly rated schools, spacious lots and interstate access. It’s the small-town atmosphere people want, with modern amenities close by.

Historic homes and more recent builds on expansive lots
“You can buy a 200-year-old home and take the time to fix it up or buy a 2000s-era home that doesn’t need so much work,” Van Doren says. “We have communities and townhouses, and those are relatively new.” Homes that usually sell for $400,000 to $900,000 have Colonial Revival or ranch-style designs, while those that range from $900,000 to almost $2 million may have farmhouse designs. Regardless of age or style, homes have sprawling lots, often with at least 3 acres. In the past, homes with surrounding farmland have sold for up to $4 million. Due to the rural setting, Tewksbury homes run on septic tanks and well water systems. The area also has some of the highest property taxes in Hunterdon County since Tewksbury operates its own schools, fire department, police department and EMS.

Highly rated and ranked schools with national recognition
The Tewksbury Township School District earns an A from Niche. The A-rated Tewksbury Elementary School feeds into Old Turnpike School, which also receives an A. Students later transfer to Voorhees High School, earning an A-minus. Niche ranks all three as the second-best public elementary, middle and high schools in Hunterdon County. Tewksbury Elementary received National Blue Ribbon School of Excellence recognition in 2011, while Voorhees High was recognized in 2015, and Old Turnpike was recognized in 2020.
Voorhees High School in Glen Gardner serves approximately 700 students in grades 9 through 12.

Historic farms turned into public spaces
Van Doren was one of the leading voices in protecting historic farmland from being developed. Because of this, Tewksbury's parks are primarily preserved farms, such as Christie Hoffman Farm Park. What once was an active farm is now a rolling green space open for horseback riding, hiking and walking among stunning nature. Some residents bring their sleds to glide down the slopes after it snows. Oldwick Fields Park features a playground and baseball fields, and the Tewksbury Township Library is next door. “There are things that we don’t have, like a community pool or tennis courts, because Tewksbury, even before me, didn’t want to suburbanize. People ask me, ‘Why don’t we have this?’ And it’s because we don’t want to grow.”

Historic buildings with modern businesses
Oldwick has the closest thing to a downtown scene in Tewksbury. The Tewksbury Inn is the only restaurant, but it’s a local favorite, nonetheless. The Oldwick General Store has been in the area since 1750, though the interior has been refreshed into a delicatessen with seating. Melick’s Town Farm is a family-owned business with an orchard, cider mill and farm in Tewksbury. Van Doren says Melick’s draws in people from nearby cities during apple-picking season. Residents might go grocery shopping at Bishop's Supermarket in White House or the ShopRite in Chester.

Nonprofits and the community meet at annual events
Many of the annual events in Tewksbury support local organizations, like the Tewksbury Historical Society’s fall Art Show held at Zion Lutheran Church’s education building. “Over 120 artists from across New Jersey, New York, Connecticut and Pennsylvania come,” Van Doren says. “It’s a week-long, juried show, and it's our most significant fundraiser.” The Tewksbury Harvest Festival raises money to support the library and the Tewksbury First Aid and Rescue Squad. “The Tewksbury Education Foundation supports the schools, and they do a barn dance.”
Some people choose to live in Tewksbury for the serene scenery but keep their jobs in busy cities in New Jersey and New York. Interstate 78 runs through the south half of the area and guides commuters east to places like Jersey City and New York City, but also west to Pennsylvania. “We have a major interchange exit on I-78, which puts you in New York City in 40 to 45 minutes on a good traffic day,” Van Doren says. Heavy traffic can make the trip closer to an hour and a half. Some commuters who prefer to take the train might drive to the White House or High Bridge station and take an hour-and-a-half ride to Penn Station in NYC. The nearest emergency rooms are north in Hackettstown and south in Flemington.
