With its abundance of lakes, streams and wooded trails, outdoor recreation is both easily accessible and woven into the town’s identity. “It’s very much call of the wild and in tune with nature here,” says Katie Syring, office manager at the Indian River Lakes Conservancy. “People here are very nature minded, and we make sure the region stays protected and not overrun. We protect the land, the water and wildlife for our people and for future generations.” Families are drawn to Theresa not only for its access to the outdoors but also for its reputable school district, which is home to the best public high school in the county. Its proximity to Watertown, the region’s largest city and main hub for employment and retail, provides residents with a balance of country living and access to urban amenities.

Theresa is defined by winding country roads and natural scenery. Homes are scattered among woods and tranquil waterways. Houses in the village are a bit closer together with deep backyards, while country properties often have multiacre land parcels. At its center lies Theresa’s Lake Region. “The entire Indian River Lakes watershed region has 18 lakes and the Indian River, and Theresa’s Lake Region is the area that’s closest to the town of Theresa,” Syring says. Within Theresa’s Lake Region, residents can explore nature preserves like Grand Lake and Redwood Hill, both offering wooded trails and tranquil water access. “Kayaking on the smaller lakes is definitely one of the more popular activities here, and snowshoeing is another really good one,” Syring adds. Locals also come to Theresa’s Lake Region for birding, ice fishing and cross-country skiing, making the area a year-round recreation destination for outdoor enthusiasts. Closer to home, Santway Park offers green space, a playground and picnic shelters.
Indian River's high school is Jefferson County's top public school
Indian River Central School District serves the community. Primary education is covered by Theresa Primary School and Indian River Intermediate School, which have a B-plus and a B-minus grade from Niche, respectively. Students may then attend Indian River Middle School, which earns a B. Rated by Niche as the No. 1 best public high school in Jefferson County, Indian River High School gets an A and offers programs in industrial arts, business and agriculture.

The town has a handful of local businesses. Two Sisters Diner is known for hearty breakfasts and traditional comfort food. Nearby, The Sports Page Pub and its neighbor, Happy Daze Hideaway, both serve classic pub food. Daily essentials are covered by Dollar General and Woodland Market, which has grocery items and some hot food. About 5 miles east, Philadelphia has a larger grocery store, while big-box retailers like Target and Walmart are less than 20 miles away along the Evans Mills-Watertown corridor.

The town’s fire department hosts several annual fundraisers, including Luck of the Draw, an ice fishing derby that's been a local tradition for more than 35 years. Distance to Watertown and Syracuse
New York state Route 26 runs through Theresa. Interstate 81 runs along the west side of the community, connecting to larger cities like Watertown and Syracuse. Watertown International Airport and Samaritan Medical Center are about 20 miles away in Watertown, which is also the region’s main retail and job hub.
