Many reasons to move to Thetford, including a scenic landscape
Established in the early 1760s, Thetford is a scenic, small New England town with a rich history and unblemished views. The little town, along the Connecticut River and New Hampshire state line, has fewer than 3,000 residents living on rolling hills beside farms, fields and dense forests. "People move here because they want their children to attend the schools, because they got a job in Hanover or simply because the landscape is gorgeous," says Jane Darrach, a Realtor at Martha E. Diebold Real Estate of Hanover, who has been selling in the area for 30 years. Those living in Thetford have easy access to Hanover employers, free tuition at a private high school and spacious yards overlooking miles of mountains. "You immediately meet people who are like-minded," Darrach says. "The skiers know one another, the rowers know one another, the moms know one another and the book-clubbers know one another."
Thetford is a perfect place to call home for those who enjoy a more remote lifestyle.

Buying or building a home on many acres
The homes of Thetford are spread out along state routes and side roads, surrounded by miles of forest. "Many houses have an acre yard, while others have many acres," Darrach says. "There's more elbow room than you'd get in any town or city." Ranch-style homes, Cape Cods and small Colonial Revivals sell between $200,000 and $375,000. Larger properties, like farmhouses, New Traditional homes and colonials from the 1800s are more expensive. They sell between $400,000 and $750,000. Some outliers have sold as high as $1.7 million in recent years. Land is also available, selling between $80,000 and $275,000, depending on acreage and location.

Tuition is waived to attend Thetford Academy
Children learn at Thetford Elementary School, rated C by Niche, from kindergarten through sixth grade. Most students attend Thetford Academy, a publicly funded but privately owned secondary school, from seventh grade through graduation. It is rated B. The academy is the state's oldest secondary school, founded in 1819. The town of Thetford pays the tuition of students who live within its boundaries, while privately paid tuition for nonresidents or other 'sending towns' is more than $25,000 per year. Since the 1970s, members of the school, including students and staff, hike mountains rather than attend class on Mountain Day. Students climb a different mountain each year of attendance, climbing six before graduation. Founders' Day is a winter carnival and art festival held in February each year since the 1940s.

Many residents work at the nearby hospital or Ivy League college
Hanover, New Hampshire, is on the other side of the Connecticut River, a short drive from Thetford via Interstate 91. According to the town's website, half the residents work in Thetford, while the other half commute to businesses in Hanover or Lebanon, slightly farther south. The two largest employers in Hanover are Dartmouth College, a private Ivy League university, and Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center. In addition to the hospital and college attracting employees, "They also attract retirees looking for activity and young families looking for good nearby schools," Darrach says. "The older residents also like the comfort of a good hospital nearby." Lebanon Municipal Airport is 20 miles south and offers daily commercial flights through Cape Air. There is a slight risk of flooding around the area's rivers and streams. Some homes are vulnerable to flooding in these zones and may require flood insurance.

During winter, and sometimes throughout spring when the season is extra snowy, skiers and snowboarders ride at Killington Peak or Okemo Ski Resort, both about 50 miles, or an hour's drive away. Drive to Hanover for restaurants, retail shopping and department stores
Hello Café at Cedar Circle Farm is a little bakery and coffee shop on the grounds of a local farm. The shop has a farm stand out front, selling produce grown right on site. Residents can grocery shop at Baker Grocery Store, and Hanover has more grocers, local restaurants, chain eateries, and clothing and home goods stores. The area around Dartmouth is full of local shops and restaurants that stay busy throughout the week. "You can't park during the day around Dartmouth, and you still can't park at night because there's always a little bustle," Darrach says.
Jan's Diner, just a town over is another great dining option for breakfast.
