Rooted by the native Washington hawthorn tree from which it gets its name, Thornhill is a small but well-established suburban city in the shadow of Louisville. Originally farmland owned by the Bates family, Thornhill’s transition to suburbia began in the 1960s. 10 miles from downtown Louisville, the winding residential streets present a peaceful vibe, with most of the travel being those going to and from work. Private clubs offer recreation and a social atmosphere with tennis courts, a golf course and playgrounds for their members within the community. Many restaurants, including anything from Mexican to Mediterranean, line the streets with a local favorite pizza parlor.

Privacy in cozy midcentury homes
Winding residential streets make Thornhill a quiet suburb just 10 miles from Louisville. “There’s only one entrance. Anyone going through here is either leaving or coming home,” says Stephen Crouch, Principal Broker of Legacy Home Realtors. Though only a portion of the area is a gated community, the private nature of the neighborhood remains, with quiet streets and well-maintained landscaping allowing for a peaceful vibe. Residents can find a range of styles, from grand Neocolonial manors and mid-century modern family homes to cozy brick bungalows and ranch styles. Most homes in the area cost $300,000 to just under $500,000, with some outlying properties costing $600,000. The only difference in cost lies in the number of bedrooms and size of the house, with style having little effect. Just outside the neighborhood are apartment complexes with condos and rental units available.

Members only clubs full of entertainment
Thornhill offers a few private clubs for recreation, though not much else in the way of public recreation. Louisville Tennis Club and Standard Club are private and members-only but feature fitness clubs and recreation spaces. The Louisville Tennis Club hosts friendly competitions and provides events and lessons for kids with Adult Supervised Match Play. The Standard Club is five minutes from the neighborhood and is a more than 100-year-old golf club with an 18-hole course and manicured greens. The club also features five tennis courts, two children’s playgrounds and a swimming pool with diving boards.
Local favorites and cozy restaurants
Residents have plenty of options for dining nearby, but for groceries, Kroger and Fresh Market are just a few minutes away. Locals can enjoy a host of restaurant options. Tokyo Restaurant is a popular sushi spot, and locals say Impellizzeri's Pizza has the best pizza in Kentucky. Felipe's Mexican Restaurant offers authentic Mexican cuisine, and for classic Italian options with comfortable decor, residents can head to Grassa Gramma.
