Tall pine and maple trees shade the residential streets of Metzger, a laid-back Washington County, Oregon neighborhood. While the community sits just east of Washington Square, one of the biggest malls in the state, residents enjoy an almost-rural atmosphere due to the bevy of greenery and the lack of traffic.
Houses here sit on cozy quarter and half-acre lots, but mature trees and gardens grant locals a sense of privacy from their neighbors. Crossing Greenberg Road takes folks to Washington Square, a premiere shopping mall home to the biggest Nordstroms, Dick’s Sporting Goods and Macy’s in Oregon. “The mall is a huge draw to the area,” says Ty Lankheet, a local real estate agent with Premiere Property Group LLC. “People are close to tons of amenities and lots of restaurant options.” Along with its expansive department stores, the mall also features over 100 shops and restaurants. The Thirsty Lion Gastropub & Grill offers an eclectic selection of pub bites, with popular menu items including the spicy fried chicken sliders and the Szechuan orange chicken. “Margharita Factory is a new one that just opened,” Lankheet says. “It’s become pretty popular and has a nice atmosphere for indoor and outdoor dining. It’s a good area for new restaurants due to the shopping traffic.” For everyday sopping needs, residents are just a mile from the closest Costco, Fred Meyer, Walmart and WinCo Foods.
Both Tigard High School and Fowler Middle School earn impressive A-minus overall Grades from Niche. Tigard is ranked the 21st best public high school in Oregon, and students can apply to participate in the CE2 program, where they can earn credit toward graduation while earning real-life community experience to explore career interests and earn practical skills for life after high school. Fowler Middle serves 750 students and earns an A rating on its teachers. Younger students can attend the B-rated Metzger Elementary School, which Niche ranks 10th on its list of standout elementary schools in the Portland area.
Parents of young children can be found with their little ones at Metzger Park, home to a playground, picnic tables and facilities for baseball and tennis. Senn Park is a pocket park less than a mile east of the neighborhood’s namesake park, and features swings and play equipment. Driving 5 miles east brings outdoor seekers to Tryon Creek State Natural Area, home to 658 acres of woodlands, suspension bridges and trickling streams. The park has over 8 miles of hiking trails, where visitors can be found hiking, biking and horseback riding.
Metzger is just 9 miles southwest of downtown Portland, and drivers can reach the city in less than 20 minutes by taking Interstate 5.
