Situated across the Indian River from NASA’s Kennedy Space Center, Titusville is more than a spot to watch rockets blast off into the Central Florida sky. It’s where engineers assemble the capsules that’ll carry astronauts to the moon and where kayakers paddle at night by the bioluminescent glow of the water. This small city of 50,000 residents is one of the communities that make up the Space Coast, the name given to Brevard County on the east coast of Florida. The region has served as an aerospace hub since the early ‘60s when NASA installed its launch operations at Cape Canaveral.
That move changed the trajectory of Titusville and the rest of the Space Coast, injecting the waterside hamlet with a high-tech spirit. On Titusville’s streets, palms rustle in the coastal breeze, high-rises speck the horizon and cafés pack into pastel storefronts. At the same time, more than 8,000 engineers work across the county, and scientists in town are testing outside-the-box ideas that include balloon rides to the edge of space. “Titusville was a sleepy bedroom community, and people tried to keep it that way for a while,” says Patrice Holley, a broker associate at Rocket City Residential by Exp. A local since the 1960s, she has worked in Titusville real estate for nearly 30 years. “We’ve been booming lately. We have more construction going on, more restaurants are starting to open and we’re getting more jobs moving to our area.”

Space industry takes off once again
Titusville and the Space Coast weren’t always economic success stories. NASA’s Space Shuttle Program, the driving force behind the region’s aerospace industry for decades, shut down in 2011. That same year, the unemployment rate in the Palm Bay-Melbourne-Titusville metro area eclipsed 10%. However, a record 72 missions launched from the Space Coast in 2023. The economy bounced back thanks to new employers besides NASA leaping into the local aerospace sector. Today, Boeing Co. and Lockheed Martin Corp. are among the companies with Titusville facilities, while SpaceX and Blue Origin employ workers across the Indian River on Merritt Island. The city aims to lure more employers through projects such as Spaceport Commerce Park, a 100-acre business park capable of hosting manufacturers, laboratories and aerospace firms. Though the manufacturing industry is the city’s biggest employer, thousands work in the health care and retail sectors as well. Hospital operator Health First and grocery chain Publix employ 11,000 people combined in Brevard County, and both have heavy presences in Titusville.
Rockets are a big part of the economy, but they can be a nuisance. Launches sometimes create sonic booms. They don't cause damage, but they're noisy, and can be heard as far away as Orlando. However, residents don't have to worry about rockets flying over their homes. Earth's eastward rotation carries rockets away from Titusville and toward the Atlantic Ocean after liftoff.
Dozens of launches lift off from Cape Canaveral each year, but they’re still novel enough that locals and tourists turn out and watch. For some missions, hundreds of spectators gather on Titusville’s Max Brewer Bridge to watch spacecraft streak through the sky. Of course, launch days sometimes result in road closures and traffic headaches.

Hiking and boating in the shadow of Kennedy Space Center
Despite the name Space Coast, Titusville sits along the Indian River rather than the ocean, with Merritt Island separating it from the Atlantic Ocean. Still, locals have plenty of ways to get out on the water. Kayak launch points, boat marinas and marshy trails dot the city’s 10 miles of shoreline. In the summer and fall, paddlers wait until the sun sets to stride across the river. The brackish waters of the Indian River Lagoon teem with single-cell organisms that glow blue when disturbed, creating a luminous streak in the water with every paddle stroke. In total, Titusville is home to 26 parks, where visitors may catch glimpses of bottlenose dolphins in the water or Falcon 9 rockets in the sky. Locals don’t hesitate if they want to take a beach day, as the ocean is about 30 miles away and can be reached in less than an hour. The nearest options are Cocoa Beach, a tourist hotspot and surfer haven, and New Smyrna Beach, known for its strip of locally owned taverns and boutiques. Public golf courses and private country clubs are playable all year, except when one of Central Florida’s frequent rain showers scuttles the round.

Job growth stokes demand for homes
Like in many Florida communities, Titusville home sales took off in 2020 as an influx of new residents came to the Sunshine State, Holley says. When remote work became common during the COVID-19 pandemic, many left big cities for smaller, less expensive towns such as Titusville. Remote workers and retirees continue to move to the city, but Holley says the biggest culprit behind the demand for homes is the growing number of employers and jobs. Though the housing market has cooled since interest rates shot up in 2022 and 2023, Titusville remains a seller’s market with less than three months of inventory. The city’s median sales price ticked up 4% between 2023 and 2024, now standing at roughly $300,000.
In response to the growing need for homes, subdivision development has surged in Titusville, especially on the south end of town. New homes are often simple designs inspired by Craftsman and ranch styles. This fresh housing stock supplements the ranch-style homes that popped up the last time the area experienced a population boom. “Everything was in Titusville when Kennedy Space Center first took off,” Holley explains. “A lot of our homes were built in the ‘60s. We were the hot spot then.” In addition, condo complexes stand along the Indian River. Many are high-rise towers with units overlooking the water.
FEMA rates the risk of a hurricane hitting Brevard County as “relatively high.” Hurricanes of Category 4 or higher rarely strike the Space Coast, but the area still receives occasional flooding due to storms. In fact, flood zones pepper riverside and inland areas of Titusville, according to FEMA data. Homebuyers may want to research supplementary flood insurance to cover the kind of damage homeowners insurance rarely covers.
Homeowners insurance in Titusville likely won’t be cheap. According to Forbes, a Floridian on average spends about $2,500 a year on an insurance premium for a $350,000 house, higher than the national average. In addition, multiple insurers have pulled out of the state since 2021 due to allegations of fraudulent claims, costly lawsuits and risks of hurricanes. This leaves homeowners with fewer options when seeking policies.

Brevard schools embrace the future of technology and manufacturing
Titusville is within the Brevard Public Schools system, graded a B-plus by Niche and ranked 25th out of Florida’s 68 public school districts. Aligning with the community’s history of manufacturing and technology work, Brevard Public Schools offers pre-apprenticeship programs and career education in fields such as cybersecurity, robotics and advanced manufacturing. Each school runs programs focused on different disciplines, but the district allows students to apply to schools they aren’t zoned to if they want to participate in specific programs. Titusville also is home to a handful of well-rated private schools, most of which have religious affiliations.
For nearby higher learning options, students can attend Eastern Florida State College in Cocoa, a small public college graded a C-plus by Niche. Alternatively, they can enroll at Florida Institute of Technology in Melbourne, an A-minus-rated private research university. Also known as Florida Tech, the school’s offerings include the College of Aeronautics, as well as seven engineering degree programs.

Titusville retail gets a facelift
Titusville’s culinary scene consists of diners slinging gravy-soaked biscuits and seafood spots located an angler’s cast away from the water. Meanwhile, the community is making over its shopping amenities, replacing shuttered indoor malls with outdoor, mixed-use retail complexes that pair big-box stores with green spaces. Likewise, downtown Titusville is changing as developers convert historical buildings into studio units and retail space, while construction companies break ground on luxury apartments. One of these projects converted the century-old Walker Hotel into street-level restaurant space with apartments above.
The aerospace industry’s footprint spreads across Titusville, where museums are dedicated to the histories of space exploration and wartime aviation. Of course, the most visited is the Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex, which draws nearly 1 million attendees each year. An arts scene endures downtown, highlighted by a handful of galleries and Titusville Playhouse, the city’s community theater since 1965.

Connecting to Orlando and beyond
Interstate 95 and U.S. Route 1 both run the length of Florida’s eastern seaboard, passing through Titusville. These roadways provide routes to nearby job and recreation centers, such as Daytona Beach to the north and Melbourne to the south. Swaths of conservation land buffer Titusville from Orlando, but commuting there along one of several east-to-west highways isn’t out of the question. Orlando is less than 50 miles away. Air travel options include Melbourne Orlando International Airport, 45 miles to the south, and Orlando International Airport, 40 miles to the southwest. Flights take off from Orlando International Airport bound for 150 domestic and international destinations.
Census data shows folks in the Palm Bay-Melbourne-Titusville metro area spend an average of 26 minutes traveling to work, right around the U.S. average. Less than 1% of those living on the Space Coast use public transit to get to work, but that doesn’t mean residents lack options. The Space Coast Area Transit bus system operates more than 20 lines between the north end of Brevard County and the south side, including many stops in Titusville.
Crime in Titusville
Brevard County historically experiences crime rates lower than the state average, according to data from the Florida Department of Health. Across the county, reports of crime increased 12% from 2022 to 2023, with simple assaults and drug offenses the most common crimes, per the Florida Department of Law Enforcement. The Titusville Police Department in 2024 overhauled its 911 Dispatch Center technology, enabling dispatchers to instantly see callers' locations. Titusville police say to expect an increase in vehicle thefts and break-ins during the summer. Locals are more likely to be out of town, leaving vehicles and homes unattended. To combat this, officers will patrol vacant properties for free if homeowners sign up for their Vacation Property Watch program.

Central Titusville puts its residents within arms reach of a rich lineup of destinations in a region widely known for its affiliation with the country’s historic space program. The Indian River to the east provides immediate access to the waterfront, where boating and fishing are just a few of the popular hobbies. Those looking for some dining options, entertainment or just local points of interest can find them downtown at places like Space View Park. Much of this part of the city is divided into a number of subdivisions and developments. The housing and the area’s overall feel are among the things that have drawn people to the city over the years, especially when compared with some of its larger neighbors in the state. “We’re more affordable than in South Florida. We’re on the coast, so we get the nice gentle breeze, and people like to fish here. We’ve got a lot going on,” says Donna Cox, a Realtor with Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices The Property Place and who has made over 180 sales in Central Titusville. Among those who have been attracted to the city are employees of the local aerospace industry. In addition to the Kennedy Space Center, both SpaceX and Blue Origin operate facilities not far from Titusville. The city has also been viewed by some as a favorable alternative to Orlando, which is located roughly 40 to 50 miles to the west, depending on the route. “Especially with retired people who want to get out of the traffic and are looking for more solitude,” Cox says. “We still have a small town feel.”
A diverse mix of housing exists here, ranging from cozy ranch-style homes and bungalows to condominiums and gated multi-story properties fronted by extensive driveways, well-manicured lawns and palm trees. Many homes also sit right along the waterfront, like on Riverside Drive where they’re located just across the road from private piers. Although the average price point in Central Titusville is just over $300,000, there are some prices that far exceed that figure. A two-story and roughly 3,800-square-foot home that’s right along the golf course and has features like a half-circle driveway can go for $725,000. Another two-story and three-bedroom Spanish revival style house build in 1925 can go for $395,000. Then a three-bedroom, brick ranch that’s right along the Indian River can go for $595,000.
Visitors at the Space View Park near downtown can see monuments and fixtures dedicated to the workers and astronauts involved in historic programs like Mercury and Gemini. Although it’s not in Titusville, the Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex is located about 13 to 17 miles south of the city on Merritt Island – depending on which route is taken. Visitors can explore attractions that cover periods ranging from the dawn of space exploration to current and ongoing missions. For recreation, residents can go to the Rotary Riverfront Park to fish on the pier, or just a little north to the La Cita Country Club to get in a few rounds of golf.
Those yearning for soul food can go to Loyd Have Mercy on South Washington Avenue, where they can try specialties like slow braised oxtails served with sweet potato puree. A little farther north is Titus Landing, where residents can shop for cosmetics at Ulta Beauty or catch a new movie at EPIC Theatres.
With the Kennedy Space Center located right across the Indian River, rocket launches can be well seen from almost anywhere in Titusville. Another well-known venue is the nonprofit Titusville Playhouse, which entertains showgoers at its two performance venues downtown.
Schools that serve the area include Apollo Elementary School, Andrew Jackson Middle School and Titusville High School, all of which received a B grade from ratings site Niche. Each school is part of Brevard Public Schools, which received a B-plus grade and is among the top 10 best districts for athletes in the state.
Interstate 95 passes through the western end of Central Titusville and runs all the way south to the Miami area. I-95 connects to Florida State Route 50, which provides a direct route west to Orlando. U.S. Highway 1 provides Central Titusville residents with a direct route to the Space Coast Regional Airport.
Southern Titusville is part of a small city that sits right along the Indian River lagoon, a location that provides both convenient waterfront access and an almost a front row seat to the many rocket launches that occur throughout the year due to the aerospace industry’s prominence in the region. Beyond the nearby Space Coast institutions, the southern end of the city in particular houses some other important sites. Among them is the Windover Archeological Site, located along Windover Way between Interstate 95 and Florida State Road 405. The historic landmark is the discovery site of prehistoric, yet well-preserved, human skeletal remains that had been buried in a pond cemetery for well over 7,000 years. The south end has historically been one of the more developed parts of Titusville when it comes to shopping. “It’s not really that big of a difference across the city, but the south is kind of the part where it’s easier to access the space center and an easier access to Orlando,” says Jimmy Mutter, a broker with Mutter Realty ERA Powered and who has made well over 100 sales across the city. “There’s more shopping down on the south end of Titusville, but the north end’s growing quite a bit, too.” A cluster of chain retailers – ranging from restaurants like Dunkin’ and Starbucks to big box stores like Walmart and Target - surround the crossing of Cheney Highway Columbia Boulevard. Residents in this part of the city can quickly get on Cheney Highway – also called Florida State Road 50 – to directly connect to Orlando to the west, where many Space Coast residents work.
The development of the Kennedy Space Center on Merritt Island in the 1960s led to a house building boom at the time. Much of the stock from that period remains, as seen in examples like a low-pitched roof ranch-style home that was built in 1963 and includes features like an attached metal-roofed carport. New housing communities have also popped up in recent years. Examples include more stylized ranch-style houses built within the last decade, with features like cross-gabled roofs and mixed stucco and stone veneer sidings. “We’ve got the best of both worlds,” Mutter says about residents being able to choose between a desirable stock of newer and older homes. The median price point in Southern Titusville is just under $390,000, making this side slightly more expensive than other parts of the city. But many, especially those who commute to Orlando to work, see the costs here as bargains. “The neat thing about Titusville is the prices are a lot better up this way. A lot of people will make that 30-minute drive to save them 20 to 30% on a home,” Mutter says.
Southern Titusville residents are close to the NASA Causeway Bridge that goes over the Indian River to connect the city to Merritt Island. Peninsula visitors can visit the Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex, located about 10 miles east from the Hills neighborhood in Southern Titusville. Visitors to the complex can explore attractions covering periods ranging from the dawn of space exploration to current missions. Local anglers can hit the shoreline at Kennedy Point Park, while nature enthusiasts can travel to the Brevard County Enchanted Forest a little farther south to hike and spot wildlife like Florida scrub lizard, gopher tortoise and bobcat.
Residents needing to do some shopping will find big box stores like Target and Walmart around Cheney Highway and Columbia Boulevard. They can then drive a short distance west on Cheney to Durango’s Steakhouse, where options also include pasta dishes and seafood like the Crunchy Cheese Haddock.
Rocket launches can be well seen from almost anywhere in Titusville, but the Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex does regularly host watch events throughout the year for those seeking even more unobstructed views.
The Space Coast Regional Airport is located right along U.S. Highway 1. The facility provides general aviation, commercial and air travel, as well as helicopter flight training.
Schools that serve Southern Titusville include Imperial Estates Elementary School, Space Coast Junior/Senior High School and Titusville High School, all of which received B grades from ratings site Niche. Families also have an alternative with the Sculptor Charter School, a kindergarten through 8 institution that received a B-plus grade from Niche.
