Mostly commercial
Located on the Ohio-Michigan border, North Towne is known for its significant commercial presence and proximity to Interstate 75. Most shopping and dining areas are at the intersection of Highway 24 (also called Telegraph Road) and Alexis Road, and residential pockets are scattered throughout the area. The community has winding tree-lined streets adorned with tidy homes, lush green lawns, and lamp posts that stand sentry at each corner.
Convenient shopping and dining
Most of the commercial areas are within walking distance of residential sections. Near Lewis Avenue, the NorthStar Plaza Shopping Center houses major retailers like Target, Kroger and Home Depot. Miracle Mile Shopping Plaza has another Kroger, a gym, a hair salon and several other local businesses. Dining favorites include local chain Sidelines Sports Eatery & Pub, Cinco de Mayo, Tokyo Steakhouse & Sushi and Brickhouse Restaurant & Bar.
Easy access to downtown and highways
Jeep, GM and Chrysler all have plants in the vicinity. "They are the biggest employers in our area," Spann says. Downtown Toledo is a 7-mile drive via back roads. The Toledo Area Regional Transit Authority bus makes several stops in North Towne, increasing accessibility to downtown and outlying areas. ProMedica Toledo Hospital is a 5-mile drive on back roads, and it's a 40-mile drive to the Detroit Metro Airport via interstates 75 and 275.
Midcentury homes
"Most people who move here want to be in the Washington school district," says Realtor Justin Spann with Key Realty, who's sold dozens of homes in this area. "You can have one house zoned for the Washington school district, and the house next door is zoned for Toledo City Schools. The price difference between the two zones might be as much as $40,000." The North Towne market grew in the 1950s and continued into the 1970s. This period is reflected in the community's various architectural styles, including Traditional, bungalows and ranch style. Lots run about 1/8 acre, suitable for a small garden or sitting area. Most homes have attached garages, and prices for these single-family properties range between $67,000 and $278,000.
High school offers advanced education
North Towne is zoned for Washington Local School District and Toledo City School District, both offering open enrollment. Students can start their education at Shoreland Elementary School, which has a B-minus Niche score. Jefferson Junior High School has a C-minus. Whitmer High School, which has a B-minus score, offers Advanced Placement, the Honors program and College Credit Plus.
Parks and trampolines
North Towne has two neighborhood parks that sit at the southern border. North Collingwood Park has a playground and swing sets for younger kids. Bennet Park is 4.4 acres and offers tennis courts and walking trails. Just 1.4 miles outside the neighborhood is Greenwood Park, where locals can hike the 1.6-mile loop trail, which takes an average of 28 min to complete. Dogs are welcome and may be off-leash in some areas. Get Air Trampoline Park is a 3-mile drive on local streets and is a destination for the whole family. In addition to trampolining, the complex's activities include dodgeball, slackline, a foam pit and massage chairs. Locals can also book birthday parties here.
GreatSchools:
The GreatSchools Rating helps parents compare schools within a state based on a variety of school quality indicators and provides a helpful picture of how effectively each school serves all of its students. Ratings are on a scale of 1 (below average) to 10 (above average) and can include test scores, college readiness, academic progress, advanced courses, equity, discipline and attendance data. We also advise parents to visit schools, consider other information on school performance and programs, and consider family needs as part of the school selection process.
