Toledo neighborhood displays distinctive characteristics

To the east, Southside borders the Maumee River, while the western side blends into Swan Creek Preserve Metropark. In between, residential sections mingle with industrial areas and businesses. Often called the Historic South End, Southside is a neighborhood of late nineteenth- and early twentieth-century homes. Narrow residential streets are tree-lined with sidewalks, and alleyways offer access to homes with garages. Some roads, like Orchard Street, retain their original brick construction, bringing a nostalgic vibe to the area. Railroad tracks run parallel to Lotus Avenue, but locals say that the track isn't used much, so it doesn't bother them. Many schools, stores, and parks are nearby, making the neighborhood very walkable, and Downtown Toledo is just 3 miles away. In the commercial areas, brightly colored murals adorn condos and apartment buildings, revealing another neighborhood personality. "Residents in the Southside neighborhood are fiercely protective of their community," says Anita Williams, a Realtor with Williams Realty. "There is a pride here in shared experiences, and that's very comforting to residents."

To the south, residents can spend the day at the Toledo Zoo, which houses 10,000 individual animals from all over the world. The Pier 75 Marina offers stunning views of the Maumee River and Lake Erie. From here, visitors can take a boat tour, go fishing or simply relax and enjoy the scenery.
