Situated near the Oquirrh, Cedar and Stansbury Mountains, Tooele is a city of about 36,000 about 30 miles from Salt Lake City. In the mid-1900s, the 7-mile Tooele Valley Railroad was built here, connecting pioneers and settlers throughout the West. Today, the area is still known as a major spot for commuters. Tooele has a quiet atmosphere, 19 miles southwest of the Great Salt Lake. “It’s a smaller community with quick access to Salt Lake City,” says Amanda Brown, a Realtor with EXIT Realty Ascendancy, who was born and raised in the area. “You’re outside of the chaos, but still close to everything.”

A rapidly growing area in Utah
According to U.S. Census Bureau data, Tooele County is growing quickly. Its population grew by 41% between 2010 and 2023. “We’re getting a lot of new commercial places,” Brown says. “People are moving here for the lower housing prices and the city’s convenient location.”
The cost of living in Tooele is 10% lower than the national average, and the median household income is $84,000, according to the Economic Research Institute. Major employers include the Tooele Army Depot, Tooele County School District, Mountain West Medical Center and Walmart.

Tooele’s streets have a suburban vibe, with widely paved sidewalks and polished front yards. Small school districts and colleges
Kids can attend school through the Tooele County School District, which earns a C from Niche. Tooele Technical College is a small school with about 600 students, and the city’s only private school, Saint Marguerite Catholic School, teaches kindergarten through eighth grade. Local places of worship include the Deseret Peak Utah Temple, Life Church Tooele and Berean Full Gospel Church.

Oquirrh Hills Golf Course has a public, 18-hole course, and many hiking trails are nearby, including Settlement Canyon Reservoir Trailhead and the Dark Trail. The nearby Deseret Peak Complex hosts the Night Lights lantern festival, where paper lanterns are released into the night sky.
