Ellenwand may be less than a quarter-square-mile, but this suburban development offers some of the largest lots in West Topeka. Leafy half-acre yards with mid-century ranch-style houses make up much of the neighborhood, while the south side is home to the Martin Creek Retirement Community. Ellenwand offers convenience to one of the state capital’s largest parks and busiest shopping hubs while just a 4- to 6.5-mile drive from downtown. “It’s a quiet little neighborhood,” says Jarod Tetuan, a Realtor with Genesis, LLC, Realtors, who has sold in Ellenwand, “And it’s located pretty much in the center of Topeka – a little to the west side, but really accessible to everything.”
Ranch-style homes on half-acre lots
Ellenwand’s straight, quarter-mile streets are lined with ranch-style homes built between the 1950s and 1970s. Most homes are situated in the middle of half-acre lots, providing plenty of space in the front yard and fenced-in backyard. That’s more than twice the size of West Topeka’s median lot size of about 0.20 acres. Wide driveways and attached garages are common features of these three-to-five-bedroom homes. They range from around 1,500 to 3,500 square feet, selling for approximately $180,000 to $350,000.
2 miles from the Wanamaker Road shopping hub
Southwest Fairlawn Road on the west side of Ellenwand has a Dollar General and a small plaza with some local businesses, including two local restaurants. Jorge’s Cantina is a popular spot for Mexican food and margaritas. Locals can also head to Riegel’s 20’s West, a sports bar and grill with pool tables, a jukebox and lots of TVs for watching Kansas City sports. About 2 miles west, there are several shopping centers on Southwest Wanamaker Road, with national chain restaurants and big-box retailers like Walmart, Target and Sam’s Club. They’re all right by the two-story West Ridge Mall, which has more than 50 businesses. Along with retailers and restaurants, the mall is home to a Sky Zone Trampoline Park, a Game Zone arcade and an indoor glow-in-the-dark mini golf course.
Close to all the fun at Gage Park
Gage Park, one of Topeka’s most prominent parks, is just a mile up the road. The 160-acre space has tons of fun activities for kids, including a 1-mile miniature train ride, a century-old carousel, the Topeka Zoo and the Kansas Children’s Discovery Center, featuring lots of hands-on learning activities. “We go there with our four kids on a weekly basis,” says Tetuan. “Some things you have to pay for, but the park part is free, and the kids love running around.” Walkways weave throughout the park, taking people over a lake bridge, under canopies of trees and to Reinisch Rose Garden’s reflecting pond and 5,500 rose bushes. People also enjoy visiting the park to play beach volleyball and swim in the outdoor community pool, which features four water slides, high dives, sprinklers and a rope obstacle.
Education through Topeka Public Schools
Students attend McCarter Elementary School and Landon Middle School, each of which earns a B-minus grade from Niche. They’ll go on to Topeka West High School, which earns a B and is ranked the third-best college prep high school in Shawnee County, offering dual credit courses through Washburn University.
4 to 6.5 miles to downtown
Topeka Metro has bus stops on Southwest 10th Avenue with routes leading 4 miles to downtown. Interstate 70 is about 1 mile away, which can be taken for a 6.5-mile drive to downtown. It also leads another 60 miles east to Kansas City. Interstate 470 is about 1.5 miles away, wrapping around the southern section of Topeka.
