A historic country town
Named for Charles Townshend, a former British Secretary of State whose family helped fan the flames of the Revolutionary War, the post-industrial community of Townsend is known today for its country feel. Once a center of manufacturing and farming, Townsend was also a proud village of Yankees that sent nearly 100 men to fight in Concord after the British arrived in 1755. They dropped the “H” as an act of rebellion from the British Townshend Acts, and today the town is a close-knit country community with large home lots and several architectural styles.
Cape Cods and colonials
Cape Cods, contemporary country homes built in the early 1990s and rustic Revolutionary War-era colonials all cost about $400,000. Home lots range from a quarter acre closer to the center of town to more than 1 acre. Prices range between $200,000 and $1 million.

As a country town, Townsend offers residents plenty of ways to experience the outdoors. Pearl Hill State Park is a campground where you can take a hike and ride a bicycle. Fishermen will appreciate Pearl Hill Brook Pond, which is also a popular place for swimming. Hunting is also allowed in the woods, as is mountain biking. With its billowing pine trees, this 1,000-acre park is a secluded area for a long weekend of camping. Neighbors can also camp at the 2,500-acre Willard Brook State Forest, which connects to Pearl Hill State Park via a 4-mile loop trail. A commuter hotspot by the interstate
Right on the New Hampshire border, Townsend is 53 miles northeast of Boston, a bit far for a daily commute, says Linda VanEmburgh, Realtor with Barrett Sotheby’s International Realty in Acton. “If you’re just commuting 25-30 minutes away, or even up to New Hampshire, you could definitely do well in Townsend,” she says. “You’re going to find a more moderate type of house.”
Townsend sits along Route 119 and Route 13, which crosses north into Brookline, New Hampshire. No major interstates pass through this rural town, which is a big part of its appeal.
