The town of Triana's history dates back to 1819, when it was established mainly as an inland port on the Tennessee River. What comes and goes these days is not so much river-borne cargo but the residents themselves. “It’s close to Redstone Arsenal Base, a major employer in the area,” says Matt Curtis, owner and Realtor at Matt Curtis Real Estate. “Residents don’t tend to stay long term because of the base, and because most of the homes in the area are starter homes.”

Most homes in Triana are ranch-style, some with attached garages, and some with brick or clapboard siding. You might see other styles too, like prairie style homes with a partial wraparound porch, split levels and National style homes. On the outskirts of town, homes are spaced further apart and often have views of open fields. More recently constructed homes tend to be New Traditional style and clustered closer together. You’ll also find ranch style duplexes closer to the downtown area. Closing sale prices for homes range from $270,000 to $320,000.

If you’re interested in getting involved in the community, the Triana Public Library is a good place to start. Triana Friends of the Library hold fundraising activities to help the library buy new materials and equipment. They also sponsor programs and partner with other community organizations to promote the library. The library hosts book clubs, story time for readers of all ages, and during the school year, they reserve a block of time once a week for school-aged kids to participate in a S.T.E.A.M. activity. The activities are geared for younger kids, but older siblings are welcome to join.

Near the library is E & N Good Home Cooking, a local soul food restaurant that serves flavorful, generous portions. Bite into crunchy fried chicken, a tasty pork rib sandwich with mac and cheese on the side, or well-seasoned, blackened catfish with sides like pinto beans and fried green tomatoes. When you’re done with your main course, top it off with a soft, moist cake for dessert.

Flamingo Park is a small green space with trees and picnic tables scattered around. There’s a basketball court and a couple of playsets for kids to climb on. The Pump House Trail is close by, if you’re interested in a leisurely stroll. A couple of other short hiking trails are the Foster Loop and the River Loop Trails near the Triana Boat Dock on the south side of town. The River Loop Trail takes you through the woods and along the Tennessee River. You’ll probably see lots of birds and herons on your walk.

And if you’re interested in aquatic-themed recreation, check out the Triana Boat Dock. It’s a nice place to fish, or to push off in a kayak and explore Indian and Barren Fork Creeks.

The Dollar General in town should have you covered for any quick, last-minute shopping needs. You’ll need to drive out to nearby shopping centers for more extensive shopping trips, since Triana is located away from the bustle of city-life. For grocery shopping, the Publix Super Market at The Shoppes at Redstone Square is about 10 minutes away. If you drive further north on Zierdt Road, you’ll reach the Publix Super Market at Madison Centre, which is near a Walmart Supercenter. You’ll pass by several casual dining and fast food options on the way. For retail shopping, the Bridge Street Town Centre is roughly 20 minutes away.

Students might attend Horizon Elementary School, Discovery Middle School and Bob Jones High School. All three schools are roughly a 20-minute drive away, but make sure to allow time for any unexpected delays.
