Easy access to outdoor attractions in Frear Park
Residents can easily access the 247-acre Frear Park from the Troy neighborhood that shares its name. The City of Troy was once home to Samuel Wilson, whose meatpacking business supplied soldiers during the War of 1812 and is believed to have become the inspiration for the country’s national symbol, Uncle Sam. The city was largely an industrial town throughout the 1800s before seeing a period of decline in the 1900s. Downtown Troy has seen a recent population boom, attracting people to neighborhoods on the city’s outskirts. “The downtown area of Troy has gotten very popular, and now people are moving up into this area because it’s more affordable,” says Joseph Cardinale, a NYS Licensed Real Estate Agent with Howard Hanna Real Estate Services, who’s been selling homes in Troy for over nine years.
Tudors and bungalows starting in the $200,000s
Homebuyers can mostly find single-family homes with Tudor and bungalow styles. Most houses in the neighborhood were constructed between the early- to mid-1900s. Properties are tightly arranged with some front and backyard green space, and nearly every home has its own driveway. Houses typically sell for $200,000 to $400,000. Frear Park receives a CAP Index Crime Score of 6-out-of-10, which is slightly higher than the national average of 4.
Frear park, local YMCA
The neighborhood's namesake park is a large municipal space offering tennis courts, a 9-hole golf course, a hockey rink and a playground. The Capital District YMCA also has indoor facilities like a gym, racquetball court and a pool. “The riverfront areas in Downtown Troy are extremely popular,” adds Cardinale. “You’re also a short drive out to Grafton and other parks just outside the city.”
Comprehensive music program at Troy High
Students may start at P.S. 18, which gets a B-minus from Niche, before going to Troy Middle, which also receives a B-minus. Troy High earns a B-plus and offers a comprehensive music program with courses for string ensembles, jazz ensembles and music technology. Less than a mile south, the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute is a private college and the oldest technological university in the country.
Commuting to Albany via 2nd Avenue
Residents can walk to Frear Park and some local restaurants, but a car is needed for further travel. Hoosick Road connects to U.S. Route 4, which runs 9 miles south to Albany. Bus stops for the local 87 and 96 lines can also be found along Hoosick Road. Samaritan Hospital is just a mile south. The closest airport, Albany International, is 10 miles away.
Shopping and dining along Hoosick Road
I Love NY Pizza has been serving pies and other Italian entrees since 2004. Just a mile down Hoosick Road, there are shopping centers with chains like Walmart and Aldi. There are also more restaurants like Plum Blossom for Chinese, Thai and Japanese dishes, as well as Ted’s Fish Fry, a local chain that’s been around since 1949. “In Downtown Troy, which is just 5 minutes away, there’s a lot more current and trendier coffee shops and restaurants,” adds Cardinale.
Year-round events in Downtown Troy
Locals can head to Downtown Troy for events and festivals throughout the year. In May, Riverfest celebrates local art and culture with over 100 vendors. There are two summer concert series: Rockin’ on the River from June to August, and the Power Park Concert Series through July and August. Professional barbeque teams compete for a spot in the Grand American Barbecue World Championship during the Troy Pig Out, which guests are able to sample. The Troy Turkey Trot marathon on Thanksgiving Day has been held since 1916. Downtown streets are also transformed into a holiday celebration for the Victorian Stroll, a tradition that has taken place since 1982.
GreatSchools:
The GreatSchools Rating helps parents compare schools within a state based on a variety of school quality indicators and provides a helpful picture of how effectively each school serves all of its students. Ratings are on a scale of 1 (below average) to 10 (above average) and can include test scores, college readiness, academic progress, advanced courses, equity, discipline and attendance data. We also advise parents to visit schools, consider other information on school performance and programs, and consider family needs as part of the school selection process.
