Lower-priced homes and a growing technology base near downtown Troy
North Central offers single- and multi-family homes close to Downtown Troy that sell for lower prices than nearby areas. Throughout the 1800s, the city was known as an industrial hub for manufacturing, before seeing a decline in the 1900s. Downtown Troy has seen a recent boom in population and businesses, resulting in growth for nearby neighborhoods, too. The Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, the oldest technological university in the country, has also had a more recent effect on the city’s identity, according to Realtor Joseph Cardinale. “There’s a growing technology base here because of its proximity to RPI,” says Cardinale, a NYS Licensed Real Estate Agent with Howard Hanna Real Estate Services, who’s been selling homes in Troy for nearly 10 years.
Traditional home styles starting in the $150,000s
North Central features colonials, Italianates and rowhouses from as early as the 1800s, as well as more modern styles like Cape Cod and Craftsman. There’s a mix of single- and multifamily properties tightly arranged along narrow streets. Most houses don’t have driveways, so residents rely on street parking. Homes typically sell for $150,000 to $450,000. North Central has a CAP Index Crime Score of 7 out of 10, which is above the national average of 4.
Nearby grocers, more businesses on Hoosick Road and downtown
City Deli Market is on Fifth Avenue, and Bargain Grocery Troy is on River Street for essentials. Nearby are also locally owned staples like Bella-Napoli Italian Bakery, which has been open since 1957. North Central also features four community gardens throughout, run by organizations like Collard City Growers and Capital Roots, that donate fresh produce to local food banks. Residents can head 3 miles down Hoosick Road to shopping centers with chains like Walmart and Aldi. Downtown Troy is also 2 miles south and has modern coffee shops, trendy restaurants and nightlife.
Festivals in downtown Troy celebrate local art and culture
There are also plenty of events and festivals happening downtown throughout the year. Riverfest celebrates local art and culture with over 100 vendors in May. There are two summer concert series: Rockin’ on the River from June to August, and the Power Park Concert Series through July and August. The Troy Pig Out in August sees professional grilling teams compete for a spot in the Grand American Barbecue World Championship, and locals can sample what they make. The Thanksgiving Day Troy Turkey Trot marathon has been held since 1916. The streets downtown are also transformed into a holiday celebration for the Victorian Stroll, a tradition that has taken place since 1982.
Students can attend Troy School District schools; RPI close by
Students may start at P.S. 2, which gets a C-plus from Niche, before going to Troy Middle, which receives a B-minus. Troy High earns a B-plus and offers a comprehensive music program with courses for string ensembles, jazz ensembles and music technology. Less than a mile south, the private Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute enrolls around 7,500 students annually.
Close to sports facilities and playgrounds
Geneva Pompey Park on Seventh Avenue was renovated in 2021 and features basketball courts, a splash pad, playground and a picnic area. Frear Park is less than a mile away and has a 9-hole golf course, tennis courts and a hockey rink. There’s also the Capital District YMCA with an indoor gym, racquetball court and pool.
Commutes on Second Avenue; bus stops throughout
There are a few walkable amenities, but North Central is mostly car dependent. U.S. Route 4, which runs through the neighborhood, gets commuters 9 miles south to Albany. “There’s a healthy mix of people who work in Troy and who work in Albany,” says Cardinale. There are also several bus stops along numbered streets for lines 85, 922 and 923. Samaritan Hospital is just 2 miles away. The closest airport, Albany International, is 10 miles away.
