Truxton offers rural living with farming and homesteading space

Truxton offers a quiet place to call home in Cortland County. "It's just east of Cortland, and it's small, even smaller than Preble, one of the smallest towns," says Realtor Loueen Rosenbush with Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices. Truxton is a simple community, home to just over 1,000 residents. There are opportunities for farming and homesteading here, allowing buyers to spread out and create their desired rural home base. Truxton has a small center with locally owned shops and is part of the Homer Central School District, which is very desirable, according to Rosenbush. The town is also close to state forests and parks, offering residents ample opportunity to get outside.

Farmhouse-style and Colonial homes surrounded by mountain views

Truxton is tucked into a valley surrounded by mountains, pastoral crop fields and swaths of oak, maple and hemlock woods. There is a cluster of homes around Main Street, typically farmhouse-style, Colonial Revival, Victorian-style or ranch-style. The median sale price in Truxton is $242,500, mainly due to the large amounts of land available. There are swaths of land between 12 and 125 acres, inviting buyers to build farms, orchards and homesteads. These acreages often have a backdrop of verdant rolling hills and are spotted with rivers, creeks and ponds.

Homer district offers consistent academic performance across grades

Homer Central School District serves over 1,800 students and scores an overall B-plus rating on Niche. Homer Elementary serves pre-kindergarten through second grade and has a B-plus. Homer Intermediate serves third through fifth grade and earns a B. Homer Junior High serves sixth through eighth grade and scores a B. Homer Senior High earns a B-plus. High schoolers can participate in extracurriculars like book club, science Olympiad and the Blue Notes, a vocal jazz ensemble

Residents enjoy nature access in every season near Truxton

State forests surround Truxton, allowing residents to get outdoors and enjoy activities throughout all four seasons. Morgan Hill State Forest spans over 5,200 acres, offering hiking, primitive camping, paddling, hunting and skiing. Donahue Woods State Forest is very rustic, with informal hiking trails and hunting areas. Labrador Hollow Unique Area is a favorite for hang gliders, snowmobiling, fishing along Labrador Creek and hiking to the scenic Tinker Falls. Other options less than 5 miles away include Cuyler Hill State Forest, Peage Hill State Forest and Dog Hollow State Forest. Playgrounds, golf courses and athletic fields are found in nearby towns like Homer and Cortland.

Churches, town hall and local shops anchor Truxton’s center

Truxton has a simple town center with churches, municipal offices and the Truxton Town Hall. The town hall is in a former depot, which is now used for community events, like the Tri-Town Harvest Fest. This festival brings the community together with a church service, games, live music, a scarecrow contest and a barbecue dinner. "The town is known for being the birthplace of John McGraw, an early baseball legend," Rosenbush says. "They even have a statue and celebration for him." Truxton Outpost is the community's general store, which offers local breads, produce and crafts. There is also a deli, where visitors can order soups and sandwiches and dine in the outdoor eating area. Truxton is also home to Hiawatha Inn, a gastropub with beer, burgers and wings. More options are available in Cortland, Ithaca and Syracuse, all of which have more grocery options, dining and events.

Truxton offers rural living with access to major roadways

New York State Route 13 runs through the community, connecting Truxton to Cortland and Interstate 81. Cortland is home to the closest hospital, Guthrie Cortland Medical Center. Truxton is less than 30 miles from Syracuse and the Syracuse Hancock International Airport. Ithaca Tompkins International Airport is another option, about 35 miles away. Truxton has a one out of 10 CAP Index Crime Score, lower than the national score of four out of 10.
