Turtle Creek gets its name from the tributary that runs along the borough’s southern edge and empties into the Monongahela River about 12 miles southeast of Pittsburgh. The stream is said to have had loads of turtles a long time ago, back before the settlers arrived when the Iroquois Nation’s Turtle Clan called this their home. That the borough often moves at a snail’s – well – turtle’s pace is coincidence alone. “It’s a more laid-back place,” says Jason Mendez, who runs Pizza Palermo in town. “It’s more of a laid-back town until high school football or the Penguins are playing. That’s when people get excited.”

Brick and stone houses sit among Pennsylvania's hills
The community is planted on hilly terrain, so don’t be surprised if you’re climbing several steps to your front door. Brick, stone and vinyl-sided, single-family homes, many with porches, line city blocks, and practically every home, even the similar ones, maintain a certain Turtle Creek individuality and pride. Pride matters here. “They want to say, ‘I’m from ‘The Creek.’’ People are proud to be from the area,” says Mendez. House hunters in Turtle Creek can expect to spend just shy of $150,000. The median selling price here is about $135,000, with prices ranging from near $50,000 to slightly above $200,000 generally. Renters occupy most houses and account for about 60% of all occupancies.

ESPN named Woodland Hills High football stadium one of the best in US
Turtle Creek students have three attendance options. They may attend Turtle Creek Elementary STEAM Academy from kindergarten through eighth grade, then Woodland Hills High School. Both are in the Woodland Hills School District, which Niche rates B-plus. Propel East is the charter school option for elementary and middle school students. High school football is a big deal around here, making the Woodland Hills Wolverines a big deal around here come football season. The Wolverines play in an 80-plus-year-old stadium called The Wolvarena, which ESPN once included among its top ten best high school football stadiums. The Wolvarena was even once voted the “most intimidating stadium in Pennsylvania.”

Rollercoasters and haunted houses nearby at Kennywood amusement park
When Turtle Creek isn’t cheering on its high school football team, you’ll find folks out at Bellwood Park, which borders neighboring Monroeville. The park, with its grassy hills, has a woodchipped playground complete with beautiful maples providing ample shade. Turtle Creek is also just 15 minutes from Kennywood, a local amusement park with classic rides, a thrilling rollercoaster and a drop tower. During the Halloween season, the amusement park cranks up the scare factor with its Phantom Fright Nights, featuring haunted houses and frightening ghouls, making the hair on the back of guests' necks stand up.

Turtle Creek has multiple pizza places
All that fright and football can work up a hefty appetite. Churchill Haus serves a daily menu and has drink specials, plus special event parties. You’ll find Shelley Pie Pizza a favorite for its super-sized pizzas and casual atmosphere. Or why not grab a slice or some wings at Pizza Palermo where Mendez says, “Everything that we make is fresh daily from local suppliers.”

Route 30 and I-376 lead to Pittsburgh
Dinner in the city is always an option, with Pittsburgh so close by. A jaunt up U.S. Route 30 and a skip over to I-376, and there you are in town for all the dining and shopping the city offers. Being centrally located and within reach of city life is part of Turtle Creek’s appeal. “It’s close to Pittsburgh and in the middle of everything,” Mendez says. There’s as much city as you need before tucking safely back into your shell at home.
