Birthplace of Helen Keller
The northwest Alabama town of Tuscumbia is steeped in history, beginning with its habitation by the Chickasaw people. The town name itself came from the name of the Chickasaw chief who lived there. Once settlers moved in and railroads began operation, the area became an agricultural and transportation hub. Tuscumbia’s claim to fame, however, is its status as the birthplace of Helen Keller. The disability rights advocate who spent most of her life deaf and blind was born here, on a homestead called Ivy Green. The town has named a library, hospital, and even a festival in her honor, and Ivy Green is now a museum with guided tours and summer plays. Today, Tuscumbia holds its history close, while its local government and community look forward to the future.
