Uhrichsville's history and present-day amenities in east Ohio
Uhrichsville is a small city in eastern Ohio that rests along Stillwater Creek and Little Stillwater Creek. The community has a water park, a golf course and several locally owned businesses. It shares a school district and many resources with its twin city, Dennison, which is just east of Little Stillwater Creek. Historically, the two cities were collectively known as the clay capital of the world, because they were home to more than 30 clay factories. Gradually, demand for chimney flue liners and clay sewer pipes decreased, and most of the kilns were dismantled by the late 1900s. Today, access to highway travel allows Uhrichsville residents to commute to jobs in Dennison, New Philadelphia and beyond.

A mix of historic homes, fixer-uppers and newer developments
Some Uhrichsville residences date back to the early 1900s, when the clay industry was booming. “The historic neighborhood is on Water Street, where the businessmen and pottery owners used to live,” says Dawn Jones, Realtor with McInturf Realty who has lived in the area her whole life. “We have all sorts of houses in just about every price range — fixer-uppers, homes with lots of land and some new developments.” Fixer-uppers tend to sell between $10,000 and $80,000, depending on the level of repairs needed. The majority of houses are priced from $80,000 to $280,000, and styles include Queen Annes, farmhouses and bungalows, as well as a few manufactured homes. After heavy rains, the creeks may rise, which can lead to property damage, so lenders may require flood insurance.

The restaurant at Big Bend Golf Course serves hearty breakfasts and sandwiches, and El Pueblito specializes in Mexican cuisine. On weekends, some people head to Holey Moley Brewing Company in Dennison, where they can drink craft beer and play pinball inside a converted Methodist church. There are also several fast-food chains along U.S. Route 250.

Dennison has a small ball field where Little League teams can practice, and each winter, there’s an outdoor skating rink in its historic downtown. New Philadelphia, about 10 miles north, is home to Tuscora Park, which has shaded walking trails, a stocked fishing pond and playgrounds, as well as a miniature railroad and a small Ferris wheel. Car travel and several nearby employers
Tuscarawas County Public Transportation offers limited shuttle service within the county for residents who do not have vehicles, but cars are essential for most travel. U.S. routes 36 and 250 are the main thoroughfares. The Akron-Canton Airport is about 45 miles north. Emergency care is available at the Trinity Health System Twin City Medical Center, in Dennison. The medical center also provides over 250 jobs, and there are several other large employers within a 15-mile radius. “We are short on housing because of all the industry development nearby,” Jones says. ProVia and Battle Creek Motors both have manufacturing plants in New Philadelphia. The Schaeffler Group has announced plans to build a factory in Dover by the end of 2025, which is expected to create more than 400 jobs.
