If you love Kermit the Frog and all things green, then the neighborhood of University Park might be for you. Once home to the master puppeteer and creator of Kermit, Jim Henson, today this community carries on his green legacy in a different way. “When you come to University Park, you feel different,” says Joel Biermann, town mayor. “If it’s not right away, subconsciously your mind is telling you – this is a nice place with trees, where people care about their environmental footprint.”
“I’ve lived here for over 10 years, and I would say the quintessential defining aspect of our town is that it’s an island oasis in an urban sea of concrete,” adds Biermann. This is in large part due to the area’s rich tree canopy, which the community has worked to protect. “It’s not just by happenstance. Over the decades, the residents of our town have highly valued the trees and we’ve done things like reimbursed people for planting trees.”
A historic community established in 1936, University Park is comprised of 923 single-family homes. Situated along the US Route 1 corridor, you’ll find a range of charming architectural styles here. Prospective buyers can choose from minimalist cottages and Cape Cods to ramblers and bungalows to larger Colonial Revival, Tudor-influenced and Mediterranean designs too. The average sales price here is $680,000, with price points varying depending on the age, size and condition of the property. An added perk of living in a historic district? "Any upgrades completed on your home would also be eligible for a tax credit," says Biermann.
Students in University Park attend Prince George’s County Public Schools like University Park Elementary, Nicolas Orem Middle and the College Park Academy (a high school serving grades 9 through 12). The College Park Academy serves over 650 students and received an overall ranking of ‘B-’ from Niche.com. For higher learning opportunities, you can't mention University Park without talking about the University of Maryland College Park campus. Located less than two miles away, this well-respected public state university offers undergraduate, graduate and doctoral programs across a wide range of topics.
For all your daily amenities, residents of University Park won’t have to travel far. Walk or drive the short half mile to US Route 1 where you’ll find plenty of amenities including a Whole Foods Market, casual eateries and retail options too. Right next door, across Adelphi Road, you'll also find the Mall at Prince George's shopping center. Or if you're more of an outdoors person, University Park's got you covered there too. “We’ve tried to make our community more pedestrian and bike-friendly by lowering the speed limit to 20 miles per hour,” adds Biermann. Combine that with ample park spaces, playgrounds and proximity to neighboring Washington DC, and you’ve got the best of both worlds at your fingertips. A small town feel with the convenience of a big city right next door.
So, “If you’re somebody who values spending time outdoors, shady trees, and being isolated from the fast-paced DC Metro-Area, then University Park could be for you,” concludes Biermann.
