Situated just west of Philadelphia in the Upper Darby Township is the vibrant Stonehurst neighborhood. A friendly suburb with an urban feel, Stonehurst offers residents a blend of walkability, neighborly community and proximity to city amenities.

Stonehurst’s narrow, grid-style streets are lined with sidewalks and parked cars, as street parking is the norm in this area. On a stroll through the neighborhood, you’ll see a mix of large stone colonials, town houses and row homes perched next to each other on small lots with shallow setbacks. Many of these homes were built in the 1920s and have since received interior updates while retaining their original architectural charm. In Stonehurst, you can get a three-bedroom renovated 1920s town house for around $175,000 or a six-bedroom upgraded stone colonial for around $250,000.

Students in Stonehurst attend Bywood Elementary School, Beverly Hills Middle School and Upper Darby High School, which all belong to the Upper Darby School District. Upper Darby High receives an overall B grade from Niche and boasts a robust Advanced Placement program in which students can take college-level courses and earn credit while still in high school.

Stonehurst residents have access to nearby nature at Cobbs Creek Park on 59th Street. This 851-acre wooded park features a 4-mile walking trail, sports fields, a pool and an ice-skating rink. Kids can enjoy the park’s new nature-themed playground, constructed solely from refurbished solid wood and designed around the existing trees, or cool off on the colorful splash pad. The Cobbs Creek Park trail also connects to the 58th Street Greenway, an off-road bike and pedestrian path that, in turn, connects to even more trails.

When hungry, head to Little Saigon on Fairfield to enjoy authentic Vietnamese dishes like spring rolls and pho in a small, cozy eatery. Little Saigon has been serving the West Philadelphia community for over 30 years. When you’re craving something sweet, swing by George’s Water Ice on Marshall Road, which is another staple in the Upper Darby area. Enjoy a wide range of water ice flavors along with snacks like hot pretzels and hot dogs. Stonehurst has proximity to many retailers, large and small. You can pick up groceries at H-Mart and The Fresh Grocer, which are both located in the neighborhood. 69th Street is lined with familiar clothing stores, including Old Navy, DTLR and Ross Dress for Less, along with a range of other shops for electronics, perfumes and more. 69th Street is also home to the popular Tower Theater music venue, which was named one of the 10 best live music venues in America by Rolling Stone magazine in 2018. If you’re looking for big box stores, a 3-mile drive north will get you to retailers like Target and Petco.

Known for being a diverse part of town, each year, the area hosts The Upper Darby International Festival on Garrett Road in front of the municipal building. This community event includes live performances and music, food from local vendors, a parade of flags and activities for all ages in celebration of the township’s diversity.

Along with walkability, Stonehurst also has quick access to the city’s bus and trolley lines from the 69th Street Transportation Center. Part of the Southeastern Pennsylvania Transportation Authority (SEPTA), this bustling transportation terminal serves roughly 35,000 passengers daily and is the second-busiest transfer point after its 15th Street station. When you’re traveling by car, Stonehurst’s proximity to Route 3 makes it easy to reach downtown Philadelphia and beyond.
