About Uvalde, TX

A new legacy for the “Winter Garden of Texas”

Uvalde’s agriculture industry and temperate climate have earned the city titles like the “Honey Capital of the World” and the “Winter Garden of Texas.” Rivers, canyons, caves and forests surround the southwest Texas community of 15,000 whose original name, Encina, is a Spanish word referencing the region’s thick oak trees. Besides agriculture, the city's leading industries include healthcare, education and construction. In 2022, tragedy struck Uvalde when it became the site of the deadliest school shooting in state history. In the years since, memorial sites honoring the victims have helped the city heal and remember its past while building a new legacy.

The Honey Capital of the World

Uvalde was named the “Honey Capital of the World” at the 1905 World’s Fair for its guajillo honey, notable for its light color and mild flavor. The Uvalde Honey Festival honors this legacy with live performances and a Honey Bake Off on Main Street. The rest of the year, residents visit Uvalde’s Main Street Historic District to shop at locally owned antique stores, eat at restaurants like Lunkers Grill and Mr. Gattis Pizza, and tour the Uvalde Grand Opera House. “We have one of the oldest operating opera houses in the state of Texas,” says Gloria Von Resma, Uvalde local and manager of Main Street Uvalde. “It’s considered haunted, and if you’re into that kind of thing, they’ll give you a tour and tell you about the different ghosts people have seen.”

Garner State Park and the Frio River

The city has hot, humid summers and mild, dry winters. The nearly year-round warm weather gives residents time to explore Uvalde’s five parks, which have all been recently upgraded. “Over the last couple of years, the nonprofit Kaboom came here to build play spaces and parks,” Von Resma says. “Between the schools and the city, we have about 11 new play spaces.” Garner State Park is one of the most popular locations for swimming, paddle boating and inner tubing on the Frio River. Preserves like Ox Ranch and War Horse Ranch are open year-round for white-tailed deer hunting.

Remembering Robb Elementary

The deadliest school shooting in Texas history took place on May 24, 2022, at Robb Elementary School in Uvalde. Nineteen students and two teachers lost their lives that day, and 17 others were injured. The school was closed and set to be demolished shortly afterward. Twenty-one murals dedicated to the victims are now spread across the city, and there are more memorials at the town square and Jardin de los Heroes Park. A month after the shooting, President Joe Biden signed into law the Bipartisan Safer Communities Act, the most significant federal gun reform legislation in decades. Actor and Uvalde native Matthew McConaughy gave a speech at the White House a few weeks before the act passed.

Legacy Elementary and Uvalde CISD

After Robb Elementary was scheduled to be torn down, the Uvalde CISD Moving Forward Foundation raised nearly $60 million to build a new school. Legacy Elementary, named in honor of the Robb Elementary victims, is expected to open in 2025. It will become the newest school in the Uvalde Consolidated Independent School District, which has a C grade on Niche. Uvalde also has two four-year college campuses: Southwest Texas College and Sul Ross State University, both near the Garner Field Airport.

I am a native of the Frio Canyon and have deep roots here. My family has been involved in ranching and agriculture in Real and Uvalde Counties since the 19th century, at one time owning most of the land where Garner State Park is now located.
After graduating from Leakey High School in 1985, I headed for the big city of Austin and received a BBA in Marketing from The University of Texas. I met my husband, Steve (an A&M graduate!) in Austin and we married in 1989. I spent 12 years happily employed as a high school teacher in the Round Rock ISD. When it came time for our oldest child to begin Kindergarten, we decided to make a change and headed for the Texas Hill Country. We have lived in Rio Frio since 2002 and just love the relaxed, peaceful, family oriented lifestyle this area affords.
My family and I are members of the Leakey United Methodist Church. I am very active in my community and have served as a Leakey ISD School Board Trustee (3 terms) and a volunteer ambulance driver for the EMS. I have twice been elected as a Real County Commissioner and currently serve in that capacity. I'm a member of the Hill Country Alliance ( whose mission is to promote smart growth in the Texas Hill Country & preserve our natural resources ), Friends of the Frio, Friends of Garner and various other organizations.
My second career as a REALTOR® and owner of my own brokerage firm is a dream come true. I hold the Graduate, REALTOR® Institute (GRI) designation, which means I have completed courses in specialized subjects including legal issues, finance, marketing, real estate investments, professional standards and environmental law. I also attained the Certified Negotiation Expert (CNE) designation. I continually strive to stay on top of my game by attending classes and obtaining training over and above that which is required to simply maintain a license. I do this in order to give my clients the expert, professional representation they deserve!
The deep roots my family has planted here, my knowledge of real estate and the local area, plus the network of local resources and professionals that I have access to will all enable me to fulfill your needs. So give me a call. I know the area, I know the people, I know the market, and I want to know you!
