A hotbed of Vallejo culture
Country Club Crest is a culturally diverse north Vallejo neighborhood known for producing rappers and hip-hop artists. A historically Black neighborhood since the 1940s, it’s part of one of the most notably mixed-population cities on the West Coast, with Latino, Asian, Black and White residents each making up about 20% of its nearly 125,000-person population. The blend of backgrounds has been fodder for artistic inspiration: “The Crest” has gained attention over the past 30 years for launching successful hip-hop artists and rappers, including SOB x RBE. The city of Vallejo filed for bankruptcy in 2008, which lasted until 2011, and the neighborhood is adapting after decades of economic strife. However, one of the city’s largest employers, Six Flags Discovery Kingdom, is next to Country Club Crest and employs many young people. “Country Club Crest is a neighborhood in transition,” says Andrew Urban, Realtor with Keller Williams and a San Francisco area real estate agent for more than 20 years. “You will find residents who have lived here for many years as well as younger buyers.” Neighborhood parks and convenience stores are within walking distance of most homes.

Commuting downtown and throughout the Bay area
Country Club Crest is 6 miles north of downtown Vallejo and about 30 miles north of San Francisco and Oakland. Highway 37 borders the southern end of Country Club Crest. It connects to Interstate 80 and Highway 29, taking drivers to San Francisco, Oakland and downtown Vallejo. “Buyers here are often looking for competitive pricing along with a location close to one of the larger Bay area employers, such as Blu Homes, Petrochem Insulation and the City of Vallejo,” Urban says. Commuters can take the SolTrans buses to get around Solano County and into Oakland. Neighborhood bus routes stop throughout Vallejo, including by Six Flags and Solano County Fairgrounds. The nearest hospital, Sutter Solano Medical Center, is less than 3 miles south. San Francisco Bay Oakland International Airport is about 38 miles south.

Bungalows with attached garages
Country Club Crest includes bungalows, small ranch-style homes and single-story cottages. Many were built around 1960 and have prominent, attached garages and modest, fenced front yards. Some homes have been renovated, while others are ready to be remodeled. Sidewalks line the neighborhood’s cul-de-sacs, and some have vibrant paint colors and yards with colorful bushes and flowering live oak trees. It can be hard to maintain green grass in the warm, dry Mediterranean climate, so some neighbors opt for gravel yards. Homes range from about $400,000 to $600,000; as of August 2024; this falls below the city’s average home price of about $623,000.

Events at Solano County Fairgrounds
While Country Club Crest doesn’t actually have a country club, it has plenty of other activities. Since 1946, Solano County Fairgrounds has hosted events that bring the community together, like the Solano County Fair every June. The Fairgrounds also serve the area in times of crisis, like when they transformed into a COVID-19 vaccination hub in 2021. Right next to the Fairgrounds is Six Flags Discovery Kingdom, which attracts visitors from all over. Citywide festivals include Visions of the Wild, an arts and film festival held downtown every October, and Black Dreams Youth Art Exhibition 2023, launched to promote local and regional Black artists. The program teaches the fundamentals of street and mural painting to kids ages 7-10.
Shopping at Gateway Plaza
Guanajuato Grill, Deli and Bakery offers groceries, specialty Latino foods, and hot foods to go, like tacos, burritos and vegetarian items. The Crest also includes grab-and-go retailers like Dutch Bros Coffee, Kings Market & Liquor and 7-Eleven. Residents can head 2 miles south to Foodmaxx for a wider grocery selection, and on the other side of I-80, Gateway Plaza includes Costco, The Home Depot and chain restaurants and retailers.
