A mix of small-town, suburb and country
Vernon is a village in the southeast corner of Waukesha County, situated around the small town of Big Bend. "A big draw of the area is that it's country living, yet still close to the Milwaukee metropolitan area," says Realtor Mellody Giese with Shorewest Realty, who lives and works around Waukesha County. "There are great schools, a couple of nearby lakes, some wonderful churches — and it's the kind of place where neighbors care about one another." But, living out this far means that large shops and city amenities are a bit of a longer drive away.

Rustic lots and new construction
Homebuyers tend to move out to Vernon to have space to spread out. Midcentury cottages and rustic farmhouses usually come with more than an acre at price points from $400,000 to $600,000. A few luxury estates can cost around $1.2 million, including private roads and backyard pools. Closer into town, older homes from the late 1800s and early 1900s start around $200,000 and get up to $450,000 for classic mid-1900s split levels and ranch homes. Pockets of new construction have begun to crop up around the edges of town, and prices for those homes range from $500,000 to $700,000.

Small-town events and youth sports
The Floyd E. Swayze Memorial Center is run by the Vernon Big Bend Lions Club and hosts community events like the annual Chicken BBQ. "Oh my gosh, the Lions Club does so much," Giese enthuses. "It's very active in the community, but they also go all over the Milwaukee area to do hearing and visual testing for kids in schools, especially in lower-income areas." The Lions Club also offers scholarships to local high school seniors. Big Bend has seasonal celebrations like a Spring Carnival and a Fourth of July fireworks show. On the regular, there are movie nights and children's storytime at the village library or social open stitch events at local business Fox River Fibers. And the Village of Vernon hosts youth sports programs at the local parks.

Vernon's dining and nightlife, made up of local restaurants and dive bars, is centered in Big Bend. Papa Stache Pub & Eatery is one of the area's late-night go-tos with closing times as late as 2:30 a.m. Bonfires and pond-side seating set the tone for this friendly establishment, which gets popular on Friday nights for its fish fry.
