Bay Colony-Cavalier Park
Fishing, boating and crabbing in Linkhorn Bay
The water is a big part of life in Bay Colony, and those who have private docks can launch boats into Linkhorn Bay steps from home. “Most of it is surrounded by water, so you have boating, fishing, waterskiing, crabbing and stuff like that,” Davis says. “I’m fortunate enough to have lived on the water for a long time. I just have a cottage, but it’s so wonderful to be at the dock and see the difference in how the oysters are growing now and how people are taking care of the bay.” Residents can also hop in their cars or golf carts to dip their toes into the Atlantic Ocean less than 2 miles away. Both Davis and Tuxill refer to Bay Colony’s access to deep water in the bay and proximity to Oceanfront Virginia Beach as “the best of both worlds.” On land, Bay Colony Park is a small, peaceful green space where residents can read, play a game of soccer or enjoy a picnic. For more activity, they head to First Landing State Park just 2 miles away. This historic park marks where colonists first landed in 1607. Since then, its position has given it interesting roles in history, including as a rumored hideout for Blackbeard. Today, the 2,888-acre park offers 20 miles of hiking trails and 1.5 miles of Chesapeake Bay beach. Nearby, Princess Anne Country Club offers members amenities like a golf course and swimming pool.Large homes on established lots
Thanks to its position on the peninsula, waterfront homes are abundant in Bay Colony, often with private docks striking out into deep water, and its peaceful, tree-lined streets feel worlds away from the nearby Oceanfront’s hustle and bustle. Its ranch-style and colonial-style homes sit back from the street on well-manicured lawns that typically stretch for at least half an acre. Fixer-uppers off the water can occasionally dip as low as $750,000, but most homes in the neighborhood sell for at least $900,000 or $1 million and can climb to around $5 million. Davis says that inventory in the neighborhood is incredibly low, especially since residents tend to stay once they settle down. Homes here just don’t come on the market often, so although the market has slowed somewhat due to high interest rates, there’s typically a lot of competition. “The market in Bay Colony is extremely fast,” Tuxill says. “When homes become available, they do not stay active for very long and often end in a bidding war.”Flag-bedecked golf carts for Fourth of July
Every year, Bay Colony’s tight-knit community gathers for a Labor Day picnic and the Fourth of July Parade, where everyone decks out their golf carts in American flags. Around Christmas, a fire truck with blaring sirens gives Santa a ride through the neighborhood to wave at local children. The Boardwalk always has events going on, from summertime concerts, art shows and festivals like the Neptune Festival to winter Christmas lights.Oceanfront shopping and dining 2 miles away
The neighborhood is heavily residential, but with the bustling Oceanfront and Boardwalk – including the famous Neptune statue – so close, residents still don’t have to drive far to pick up essentials or go on a shopping spree. Harris Teeter is just 2 miles away and an abundance of popular shopping and dining are found near the Oceanfront. Pocahontas Pancake House, which sports murals along its inside walls, is known for its French toast and waffles and even offers gluten-free pancakes. Pelon’s Baja Grill Oceanfront has great fish tacos and an abundance of vegan options, including vegan carne asada tacos. Residents often hop in their golf carts to treat themselves to dinner at The Historic Cavalier Hotel and Beach Club, called The Old Cavalier by locals.School district is top-rated on Niche
Niche gives Virginia Beach City Public Schools an A rating and lists it among the top 2 districts in the Norfolk area. Children in Bay Colony attend schools like Linkhorn Park Elementary School, which has an A-minus, Virginia Beach Middle School, which has an A, and Frank W. Cox High School. Cox High has an A and is among Niche’s list of top 10 public high schools in Norfolk. It has earned the Virginia High School League’s Wachovia Cup, a coveted distinction for academic and athletic success, 12 times – more than any other school in the state.
Easy access to Pacific Avenue and Laskin Road
Bay Colony-Cavalier Park’s lack of major roads saves it from through-traffic during the on-season and contributes to its quiet atmosphere. Still, it takes just a matter of minutes to hop onto Pacific Avenue or Route 58, otherwise called Laskin Road. These roads can be quite clogged during tourist season, though, adding to travel times.
