Why people move to Haygood Point
Haygood Point sits along the shores of Lake Smith, offering a quiet setting that still feels connected to the rest of Virginia Beach. Residents with lakefront homes can head out to their docks to launch a kayak or go fishing, and for those who don’t live on the water, Lake Lawson/Lake Smith Natural Area is just a short drive away. Beyond waterfront recreation, the neighborhood is zoned for highly rated public schools and located near some of the region’s largest employers, making it a practical fit for families, military personnel and hospital staff alike.
House styles, prices and sizes
You’ll find Colonial Revival and ranch-style homes along Haygood Point’s winding roads and cul-de-sacs. The median sale price here is around $630,000, which is above Virginia Beach’s median of about $400,000. That’s also higher than what you’ll find in nearby neighborhoods like Aragona Village and Bayside. Compared to those places, homes in Haygood Point tend to be larger, with a median size of about 2,600 square feet. “Most people who move over here have already had a couple of kids and are ready for more space than their last place offered,” says Al Lozito, a Realtor with The Real Estate Group who lives in the neighboring community of Thoroughgood. Prices in Haygood Point typically range from the lower $400,000s to the lower $900,000s, depending on the home’s size and proximity to the water.
What to know about flooding
The neighborhood does have a flood risk, but it’s not a huge concern for a lot of residents. “Flood insurance is only mandatory if you actually live on the lake,” Lozito says. “Even then, it’s far less serious than what you’d deal with living closer to the beach.”
Easy access to Lake Smith, several beaches and other recreation spots
Whether you want to spend time on the lake or the ocean, plenty of spots to get out on the water are nearby. The neighborhood is less than 8 miles from:
Lake Lawson/Lake Smith Natural Area, which has a boat ramp, a fishing pier and hiking trails
Ocean View Beach Park, a Chesapeake Bay beach that hosts a concert series from May through July
First Landing State Park, an oceanfront park with beaches, fishing areas and campgrounds
These places are all popular with tourists during the summer, and getting there early usually helps beat the crowds. “You have to be one of the first people in the parking lot because they fill up so quickly around here,” Lozito says. “It’s the only way to get a decent spot on the beach or to get a boat out quickly.” Closer to home, Haygood Point Park offers a playground and a basketball court. Several 18-hole golf courses are also less than 4 miles away, including the one at Cypress Point Country Club, which is open to the public..
Where kids go to school
Haygood Point is zoned for Virginia Beach Public Schools. Kids can attend Pembroke Meadows Elementary School, Independence Middle School and Bayside High School, which is on the neighborhood’s southern end. The district offers out-of-zone transfers in certain cases, including military relocation, though approval depends on the school’s available space.
Nearby stores and restaurants
Haygood Shopping Center is just south of the neighborhood with, major retailers including Harris Teeter, Marshalls and Five Below. It is also home to several restaurants, ranging from national chains like Chick-fil-A to regional favorites like Kelly’s Tavern and The Egg Bistro. For even more shopping and dining options, Town Center of Virginia Beach and Norfolk Premium Outlets are both less than 5 miles away.
Distance from major employers and what traffic is like
Haygood Point is centrally located near several of the biggest employers in Virginia Beach and Norfolk. From the neighborhood, you’re about:
4 miles from Sentara Leigh Hospital and Joint Expeditionary Base Little Creek-Fort Story
6 miles from Norfolk International Airport
12 miles from Naval Station Norfolk
15 miles from Naval Air Station Oceana
You can typically get to any of these places in 15 to 30 minutes, though the drives sometimes take longer during rush hour and tourist season. “If it’s Fourth of July week or any other summer holiday, I basically just take my regular commute time and double it,” Lozito says. Luckily, Haygood Point is rarely impacted by this traffic, thanks to its lack of through streets and location roughly 4 miles away from any major highways.
