Why homebuyers want Shadowlawn's walkable, coastal lifestyle

Shadowlawn in Virginia Beach sits along Lake Rudee, a few blocks from the Oceanfront. It has a classic neighborhood feel with mature trees and sidewalk-lined streets, but its main appeal is its convenient location that puts popular restaurants and the beach within walking distance. Homes range from older condos and townhouses to custom coastal properties on the waterfront. Students here can attend highly rated public schools, and commuters are a few minutes’ drive from major highways.

Single-family homes and condos in a variety of architectural styles

Towering trees shade the gridded streets of Shadowlawn, where you’ll find a mix of single-family homes built between the 1950s and today. Ranch-style and contemporary dwellings sit beside larger New Traditionals, Craftsman-inspired transitionals and custom coastal designs. Lots are on the smaller side, usually less than a quarter acre, but with enough room for in-ground pools. Waterfront properties typically have private docks. If you’re looking for a lower-maintenance option, there are condos and townhouses. The units are from the 1970s and 1980s, but many have been updated over the years.

According to the First Street Foundation, Shadowlawn has a major risk of flooding, so flood insurance may be required. And while the neighborhood is quite peaceful, Naval Air Station Oceana is nearby, so you may hear jet noise.
