Thoroughgood's historic location
On the northwest side of the Witch Duck Bay is Thoroughgood. Named for Thoroughgood House, a National Historic Landmark and one of the oldest colonial homes in Virginia Beach, the neighborhood is prized by locals for its proximity to Chic’s Beach and First Landing State Park. Streets are shaded by tall evergreens, and lush, green lawns meet the pavement. Initially developed in the 1950s, real estate options are now a mix of modest mid-century homes on half-acre lots and large, traditional-style ones on the waterfront. Nearby shopping opportunities abound, and the school district is highly-rated.
Locals enjoy Chic's Beach
The Thoroughgood neighborhood is about 13 miles from the Virginia Beach beachfront, but most locals prefer to go to Chic’s Beach. “It’s on the bay and is more protected. The Virginia Beach waves are a bit rough, and Chic’s Beach has milder waves, so it’s better for kids,” says Craig Boyer, who is a longtime Virginia Beach local and has served the Tidewater region as a Realtor and investment agent at All/Pros Realty Inc. for more than 14 years. “Thoroughgood is also close to First Landing State Park. It’s a wonderful place to bike or run because you feel like you’re completely in nature. There are some sections of trail with Spanish moss hanging from the trees and others where you can run right along the beach.” First Landing State Park is about 6.5 miles from Thoroughgood, and Chic’s Beach is around 2.5 miles away.
Thoroughgood housing options
Much of Thoroughgood sprang up in the early 1950’s suburban housing boom as part of one of the first large-scale custom home developments in Virginia Beach. “Thoroughgood is very popular because of its location and the large lots. People take excellent care of their homes, and they retain their value well,” Boyer says. Ranch and split-level residences sitting on about 0.5 acres of land will go for around $400,000 to $550,000 on average, depending on square footage and condition. There are also several traditional-style homes with up to 6,000 square feet of living space listed for over $1 million. Those on the waterfront may exceed $2 million.

Events near the Thoroughgood neighborhood
Virginia Beach hosts events year-round, including Fourth of July fireworks, a holiday parade and food and wine festivals. There are several music venues nearby as well, such as the Veterans United Home Loans Amphitheater, about a 10-mile drive from Thoroughgood, and The Sandler Center for the Performing Arts, which is about 4 miles away. The Neptune Festival holds a sand-sculpting contest on the beach each fall, drawing artists from around the world to compete.
Thoroughgood is less than 6 miles from Premium Outlets and IKEA
Intersecting Northampton and Independence Boulevards at the northeastern corner of the neighborhood is Pleasure House Road, known as Thoroughgood’s dining quarter. New River Taphouse and 1608 Crafthouse are popular spots there for residents to enjoy local and regional brews and classic American fare. There are three grocery stores on Shore Drive; the closest is a Kroger that’s less than 2 miles away from the neighborhood. For retail therapy or home decor, Premium Outlets and IKEA are a 5.5-mile drive west along Northampton Boulevard.
Thoroughgood students zoned for highly-rated Virginia Beach schools
Thoroughgood students fall within the Virginia Beach City Public School District, which Niche rates as one of the best in the area. Thoroughgood Elementary, rebuilt in 2020, was designed to use geothermal energy and to allow for collaborative learning. It earns an A on Niche and has received the Virginia Board of Education Excellence Award multiple times. Children can then attend A-minus-rated Independence Middle School and participate in extracurricular clubs, including robotics, yearbook and Dungeons and Dragons. Some Thoroughgood children are zoned for Princess Anne High School, which gets an A-plus, where they can participate in the International Baccalaureate Programme and take Advanced Placement courses.
Northampton Boulevard and Norfolk International Airport
“It’s really an ideal location. You’re right off Northampton Boulevard, which can take you to outlets, to the airport and even across the Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel,” Boyer says. Norfolk International Airport is 8 miles away and planes fly directly to cities such as Las Vegas and Philadelphia. Hampton Roads Transit buses stop along Independence Boulevard and Pleasure House Road, taking riders to and from Norfolk. Buses run from about 6:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. on weekdays and Saturdays.
Flood zones and docks
The Thouroughgood neighborhood is about 20 feet above sea level, which puts residences near water at risk of flooding. Homeowners who have docks or land along the water may be required to purchase flood insurance if it falls into Zone AE.
