Walker offers natural beauty, from river bends to dark skies
Pleasant days and starry nights await in Walker, Louisiana. It’s one of only two cities in Livingston Parish and was founded in the 1820s. Originally called Milton Old Field, the town’s name was changed to Walker in 1890. Located in the pine woods near the twisting Amite River and some 20 miles east of Baton Rouge, Walker has a small urban core. But it stretches far beyond that to embrace open, rural land. There’s so little light pollution on the outskirts of town that a national observatory makes its home there, as it scans the skies, catching glimpses of what lies beyond the Milky Way.
Parks and green spaces in Walker give you a serene connection with nature.

Walker’s observatory connects science lovers to the cosmos
One of the most unique features of the Walker area is the LIGO Livingston Observatory. One of four sites working in conjunction to detect gravitational waves in space, the station’s sister site is located over 3,000 kilometers away in Hanford, Washington. Gravitational waves can signal the birth or death of a star as well as when stars collide. The public can learn more about what these waves mean on the first Saturday of every month when the observatory opens to the community by appointment. There are over 50 interactive exhibits in the Science Education Center for young and old to explore in this remote area of Livingston Parish.
