Suburban New England at its best

Occupying 40 square miles of south-central Connecticut, Wallingford is more than just a quintessential New England town. With abundant green spaces, a vibrant downtown sector and easy highway access, Wallingford pairs its convenient location between New Haven and Hartford with all the amenities homebuyers are looking for in one location. And that location just happens to be quintessentially New England. What’s more, the Wallingford Amtrak station provides service to destinations up and down the East Coast, making it even easier for residents to get to Boston, New York or any other big-city destination for work or play. “People love the small-town feel of Wallingford,” says real estate agent Seth Winkleman. “It’s suburban New England at its best.”

The great outdoors

With over 30 parks from which to choose, residents of Wallingford are never at a loss for outdoor spots. Tyler Mill Preserve features miles of trails through the wooded 1,500 acres of protected public open space and is favored by mountain bikers, horseback riders and hikers. The 2.1-mile Orchard Glen Trail is another popular hiking spot, and the Quinnipiac River Linear Trail is mostly paved, making it an ideal option for cyclists and families. Lufbery Park is home to The Flying Ace Disc Golf Course, with 18 holes covering a challenging course featuring plenty of trees. Pragemann Park offers access to athletic fields, picnic tables grills, while Harrison Park has 8 tennis courts and a baseball diamond. Four-legged family members even have their own park, the Wallingford Dog Park. Winkleman also mentions Doolittle Park and Community Lake Park as popular with locals. Doolittle Park is home to the Walingford Community Playground and the Wallingford Garden Market farmers market, while Community Lake Park offers anglers the opportunity to fish from the banks of Community Lake. And golfers need not feel left out, as they can tee off at Wheeler Family Traditions Golf Club, a public 18-hole course staffed by PGA-certified teaching professionals.

A vibrant and eclectic downtown sector

Downtown Wallingford is stocked with a variety of local retailers and service providers, so residents here don’t have to travel far to do a little shopping. From clothing to home accessories, downtown has a shop to satisfy just about any need. But just in case, national retailers like Walmart Supercenter, Kohl’s, Lowe’s and PetCo are located in the northern section of town. For some indoor entertainment, Holiday Cinemas 14 shows the latest releases in theaters featuring stadium seating and Blue Ox Axe Throwing invites visitors to take their best shot under the supervision of trained professionals to ensure safety. And the Toyota Oakdale Theater is nationally renowned for its productions, which range from comedy shows to Broadway shows to holiday classics like “The Nutcracker.”

All that activity can lead to hunger, and Wallingford delivers on the food front. No self-respecting resident of Connecticut would publicly admit to preferring a plain-old grilled or griddled cheeseburger, instead proclaiming the superiority of the Connecticut invention known as the steamed cheeseburger. American Steamed Cheeseburgers continues the tradition born in the 1920s in Middletown, serving up the Connecticut classic to hungry diners. Pair it with a Moxie Soda, and it’s hard to go wrong. For a slightly more upscale dining experience, Michael’s Trattoria offers highly rated Italian cuisine, and the Library Wine Bar & Bistro serves a wide variety of entrees ranging from fresh seafood to pasta to steak in the building that originally served as Walingford’s original public library. Home chefs will appreciate the abundance of grocery stores in town, including Stop & Shop, ALDI and ShopRite.

I-91, the train keeps residents moving

Commuters traveling to other parts of Connecticut only have to drive about 14 miles south on I-91 to New Haven and 28 miles north on I-91 to Hartford. Residents looking to skip the highways can access the bus along the many stops along the main thoroughfares. And to go a little further, the Wallingford Amtrak station is conveniently located off North Cherry Street, with trains traveling up and down the East Coast.
