Aptly named Buena Vista translates to “good view”
Situated 25 miles east of San Francisco in the small city of Walnut Creek, California, is the Buena Vista neighborhood, where shaded sidewalks stretch along tree-lined streets and hilly cul-de-sacs. The abundance of greenery, coupled with the varying elevations of these homes, give homeowners a sense of privacy and seclusion. Many homes have views of Mount Diablo, the region’s tallest peak at 3,849 feet. Buena Vista balances residential privacy with proximity to Walnut Creek’s vibrant downtown. Homeowners also have convenient access to top-rated public schools and local houses of worship, like the Islamic Center of Walnut Creek and The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

Townhouses, contemporary homes and ranch-styles
Buena Vista’s winding roads lead to architecturally diverse hillside homes. Midcentury single-levels and gabled contemporary homes are perched on lots ranging from a quarter to a half-acre, with lush landscaping between neighbors. At the neighborhood’s highest elevation, The Secluded Valley subdivision offers views of downtown Walnut Creek, Mount Diablo and the surrounding hills and valleys. Secluded Valley HOA dues are $500 as of 2024. Dues help to maintain common areas such as the pickleball courts and playground.
Midcentury ranch-styles range from $680,000 to $830,000. Updated and renovated homes cost between $1.1 and $1.9 million, with homes over $1.6 million exceeding 2,000 square feet. “Around Walnut Creek, we’re seeing homes take a little longer to sell right now,” says Holly Sibley, realtor with Dudum Real Estate Group, who has been selling real estate in the area for over 13 years. “I’d say 25 days on the market is typical, and the house needs to be in tip-top shape. Buyers are looking for homes that are completely updated.” Buena Vista also contains some townhouses located near Interstate 680; prices range between $640,000 to $855,000.

Thousands of acres to hike
Large swaths of protected land surround Buena Vista and the Walnut Creek area. The Acalanes Ridge trailhead on Sousa Drive is walkable from many Buena Vista residences: from here, hikers can explore 4 miles of dirt paths on 200 acres of land right in the neighborhood. Green grass and flowers grow along the trail even in winter, and Mount Diablo is visible to the southeast. For longer outdoor excursions beyond Buena Vista, hikers check out nearby 20,000-acre Mount Diablo State Park and 6,000-acre Briones Regional Park. Of course, there’s more to the area than just hiking. For those who don’t have pools in their backyards, locals can exercise at nearby Larkey Park Swim Center; its public outdoor pool is located right next to beach volleyball courts. There is also an extensive network of paved paths for multi-use recreation. For example, the 32-mile Iron Horse Regional Trail is “popular all the time,” says Dave Mason, Public Information Supervisor at East Bay Regional Park District. “It’s heavily used for running, commuting, dog walking and cycling.” It connects to Contra Costa Canal Trail and the Briones to Mount Diablo Regional Trail, which both border Buena Vista.
