Master-planned 55-plus community offers "astounding" array of amenities
To say that Rossmoor is an engaging 55-plus community would be an understatement. The expansive Walnut Creek development offers traditional resort-style amenities, but it provides residents with, much, much more, including a newspaper and bus service. “The breadth of what is available is astounding,” says P. Scott Rogers, a Realtor who works for Rossmoor Realty. “There are over 200 clubs. They have a movie theater, a library and an entire craft center. And if you want to play cards, OK, they have a card room. Most places, you can take classes, but in Rossmoor, they’re big on bringing people in to teach you. For instance, in their woodworking shop there are always people on call who know how to run the machines. The people in Rossmoor choose to share their knowledge.”

Resident experience is second to none
The community is home to five clubhouses, 27 holes of golf, eight tennis courts, three pools, including one enclosed facility, and a plethora of other amenities. But the community has not stopped improving the resident experience. “There’s a state-of-the-art gym that underwent a renovation that was probably in the $10 million range, and they’re getting ready to build a pickleball center,” says Rogers. Even with regular improvements, Rossmoor still goes above and beyond in the services and perks it provides. The Rossmoor News, which focuses on the events, activities and news within the community and surrounding areas, is published weekly and is delivered to every home. Residents are encouraged to submit articles, columns, photos and letters to the editor. “The newspaper has always been actively engaged with the community,” says Rogers. “It’s basically the Gospel of what’s going on in Rossmoor.” Pertinent information also can be found online at rossmoornews.com.

Rossmoor Event Center, curbside bus service among the special amenities
A highlight of the community’s many attractions is the Rossmoor Event Center, a 500-plus-seat dining and entertainment venue that hosts dinner dances, live musical performances and plays. Residents also have access to first-class dining at Creekside Bar & Grill. Traditional retail and dining options are easily accessible along Tice Valley Boulevard. Residents can stock up at Safeway and fill up at El Jardin Taqueria, a family owned restaurant that serves up highly rated authentic Mexican food. Residents also can take advantage of the proximity to Tice Valley Park, which offers recreational activities for residents of all ages and plenty of room to roam amid the picturesque landscape. “While it’s a very nice senior community, you also have access to everything else outside of it,” says Rogers. “It’s very unique in that way.” For those who want or need a ride, Rossmoor offers its own form of public transportation. Dial-A-Bus operates on weekdays, weekends and holidays. It includes destinations throughout the community, the Rossmoor Shopping Center and several medical facilities in and around the community. Pickups are made curbside. “Rossmoor is basically a city unto itself,” says Rogers. “And the best part is that you can be as active as you want to be. Even if you want to keep to yourself, they are just happy to have you. It’s just one of those welcoming places. It’s a great place to live.”

A wide variety of condominiums highlights the mostly multi-family housing options
Opened in 1964, Rossmoor is one of the longest-running age-restricted communities in the country. Having been built out between 1963 and 2002, it features a vast array of condominiums and includes a small collection of single-family homes. Prices range from the low $300,000s for a 1-bedroom condo to more than $2.5 million for the most expensive homes. “Rossmoor’s 6,800 residences are spread out over 1,8000 acres. You can’t do this anywhere anymore,” says Rogers. “That much land is too expensive today, especially in California. You can build 6,800 residences, but they’d be right on top of one another.” The community is made up of 23 separate homeowners’ associations called mutuals, each with its own board of directors. HOA fees are generally $800 to $1,000 per month for multi-family housing and in the $600-$700 range for single-family homes.
