Walworth offers quiet living with farmland and country roads
Walworth was founded as a farming community in 1830, and not much has changed since. The town is full of farmland and country backroads, making it a quiet place to settle down. It’s about 20 miles east of Rochester and close to the city’s suburbs. Luke Cino, a broker at Cornerstone Realty Associates who has been selling homes in the region for 20 years, notes that new homebuyers are often drawn to Walworth for its prime location. “If they weren’t already living in the area — upgrading or moving within the community — usually they like Walworth because it's central," Cino says. "The 31 corridor takes you right into the Perinton area, and 441 takes you right into the Fairpoint area." The biggest change in Walworth came in the 1970s with the development of Gananda , a planned community with a more suburban atmosphere that continues to grow today.
Country properties and suburban developments in Gananda
Developments on the east side of Gananda feature ranch-style, split-level, bi-level and Colonial Revival homes built between the 1970s and ‘90s on mostly quarter-acre lots. They range from around $200,000 to $310,000. The west side has similar homes, along with New Traditional designs from the 1990s through today, which sell for around $300,000 to $450,000. Homes of all kinds, dating from the late 1800s through today, can be found out in the country. A house on less than an acre of land costs between $180,000 and $450,000. For a home with an acre or more of land, homebuyers can expect to spend around $250,000 to $400,000, or anywhere from $500,000 to $800,000 for upscale properties.
Homes stay on the market for an average of 15 days, significantly lower than the national average of 52 days. The town also has a CAP Index Crime Score of 1 out of 10, lower than the national average of 4.
Indoor and outdoor sports facilities
Walworth is home to the Tri-County Sports Complex, which hosts indoor sports leagues for kids and adults, including basketball and flag football. Outdoor baseball, softball and soccer leagues are held at Ginegaw Park, which is right next to the Walworth-Seely Public Library. The park also has a playground and nature trails to explore. Locals have easy access to public golf courses, including The Links at Greystone or Blue Heron Golf Club, which offers unlimited golf and other perks for members. Walworth is about 15 minutes from Lake Ontario and 30 minutes from Canandaigua Lake, one of the Finger Lakes.
Local pizza shops and a grocery store in the town center
The town’s few stores and restaurants are at the intersection of Walworth-Ontario and Walworth-Marion roads. There are two pizza shops, both of which are well-known chains in the Rochester region. Salvatore’s Old Fashioned Pizza and Mark’s Pizzeria serve pizza, subs, wings and other Italian-American foods. Locals shop for groceries at Tops, which has a gas station, and head to Dollar General for other essentials. Ginegaw Park hosts a farmers market every Tuesday afternoon from June through October. Cino, who also runs a cattle farm, has been a vendor at the farmers market in the past. “It’s a lively market that’s been there for years. It has a pretty good following,” Cino says. The market features a variety of products from local vendors, including meat, produce and crafts.
Wayne and Gananda Central School Districts
A large portion of Walworth is served by the Wayne Central School District, with schools about 6 miles away in Ontario. The school district receives a B-plus grade from Niche. Wayne Senior High School has a solid athletic program. In 2024, the Eagles won two track and field events and reached the boys basketball state championship.
Students on the south side of Walworth are served by the Gananda Central School District, which receives a B-minus grade from Niche. This is a much smaller school district with about 900 students, compared to Wayne Central’s 2,000. Gananda Central students attend Ruben A. Cirillo High School, which offers a work-based learning program, allowing students to get hands-on experience with local businesses.
Getting to Rochester and the eastern suburbs
From Walworth-Penfield Road (State Route 441) it takes about 15 to 25 minutes to drive to Rochester’s eastern suburbs. To get to Rochester, it’s about 30 minutes. The city is home to Frederick Douglass Greater Rochester International Airport, where travelers can fly to 23 U.S. cities.
