Ware, a town known for its waterways
As a former fishing spot for Quabaug Native Americans and a bustling milling town in the 1800s, Ware and its namesake river have been a popular western Massachusetts area for centuries. The 412-billion-gallon Quabbin Reservoir also borders the town’s northern region. As the state's largest inland body of water, it supplies the area with ample fishing, boating and scenic hiking opportunities. “Ware is a small town, but it still feels very suburban,” says Christi Smith, a Realtor with Hometown Realty who has sold several homes in the area. “There’s a Walmart and a small downtown area. And it’s right between larger cities like Worcester and Springfield.”
Turn-of-the-century properties abound
The sidewalk-lined streets at Ware’s core are brimming with dwellings from the late 19th century. Homebuyers will find four-bedroom saltbox styles, Victorians on 1-acre lots and Colonial Revivals with street parking. “Some older homes need interior updates, but they’re never too extensive. A lot of investors are buying in the area,” says Smith. The town’s outskirts are filled with three-bedroom ranch styles and New Traditional estates on half-acre lots. No matter when it was built, a home in Ware typically costs between $200,000 and $400,000, a range similar to a Hampshire County home’s average $400,000 selling price.

Quabbin Reservoir, Ware River, and small-town community hubs
While swimming in the Quabbin Reservoir is prohibited, hikers and bikers can hop on the Quabbin Tower Trail on Quabbin Hill Road. The 6-mile, looped route passes over the spillway, the hilly landscape of Enfield Lookout and forests filled with red pine trees. The land's plentiful eagle and common loon nests also make it a popular destination for birdwatchers. Licensed anglers can fish for largemouth bass and landlocked salmon on the rocky shoreline near Swift River or from a motorized boat with the Quabbin seal in the waterway’s northern region. The nearest boat launch is off Old Ward Road in Belchertown.
The town has several other community hubs, including Ware Dog Park on Pleasant Street. Grenville Park is another green space in town, and it’s made up of over 100 acres west of Ware River. Visitors can cast a line off its two fishing piers, run around the steel playground or cross-country ski across miles of rolling, forested trailway. Athletes will also find activity on the tennis courts, the baseball diamonds and the basketball courts. The Ware Historical Commission maintains multiple sites across town, like Veterans’ Park on Main Street and the Ware Center Meetinghouse on Belchertown Road. With monthly music classes and weekly craft workshops, the Young Men’s Library Association on Main Street offers children plenty of programs.

It's a really beautiful, friendly little town - at least it would be if there weren't so many junkies hanging out on Main Street all the time. Ware is actually a cross between Belchertown and Indian Orchard. There are really nice areas, and the Main Street area is very well-kept with lots of mom and pop shops, but right behind Main Street, on both sides, are projects. It's bizarre.

Ware is a relatively quiet town that is family-friendly and has wonderful public schools. The town is close to a few good towns that have a lot of options for food for a romantic night out or for a family outing.

I had heard nothing but negative things about Ware my entire young-adult life, but once I got a job here I moved into town b/c the 36 minute back-roads commute had gotten very old fast, AND the rent here is the cheapest I've ever seen in MA.. You can't complain about that. I've been working & living here for almost a year now & i really don't see what's so bad about it. It is an old mill town, so it's to be expected that the downtown looks pretty depressive & lifeless. You can't come here expecting it to be some hip college town. The people so far have been much friendlier than I'd expected, & since I don't hang around where the drugs are, I really haven't noticed much involving all the bad things people talked down about. If you aren't expecting it to be some amazing modern place, you won't be disappointed at all. It's far from everything, but I actually prefer that.

Everyone knows everyone. There are a lot of fires. There are a lot of drugs too. People leave their needles lying around. Children walk around alone. Everything is in walking distance. The Walmart is convenient.
